Arsenal rocked as Atletico reject staggering €200m Alvarez move

Arsenal have suffered a major setback in their pursuit of Julián Álvarez. Atlético Madrid insist they will reject offers worth up to €200million.

Mikel Arteta admires the Argentina international and wants another elite forward this summer. Álvarez can play through the middle or across the front line.

Arsenal have explored a possible deal after winning the Premier League last season. However, Atlético chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil Marín has now issued a firm response.

Speaking mainly about Barcelona’s interest, Gil Marín said Atlético had already rejected a €100m proposal.

“My position is clear, the club’s position is clear,” Gil Marín said in comments carried by Yahoo Sports.

“We do not want to transfer him. We did not accept an offer of €100million, and we will not accept one of €150million or even €200million.”

Atlético close the door on Arsenal

Álvarez has suggested that a summer exit could suit all parties. Reports claim he would prefer to remain in Spain, with Barcelona his favoured destination.

Arsenal continue to follow the situation. Yet Atlético’s public stance leaves little room for negotiations.

The 26-year-old has a contract until 2030. Atlético therefore control his immediate future and face no pressure to accept a sale.

Diego Simeone also sees Álvarez as a central part of his plans. The forward scored consistently last season and remains one of the club’s most valuable players.

As Read Arsenal reported after talks began, Arsenal had already struggled to match Atlético’s valuation.

Gil Marín’s comments have now raised the barrier even further.

Andrea Berta must decide whether Atlético have completely closed the door. The comments could also form part of a negotiating strategy aimed at Barcelona.

For now, Arsenal face a difficult route to any agreement.

Álvarez remains an attractive option because of his quality, versatility and Premier League experience. He previously spent two seasons with Manchester City before joining Atlético in 2024.

However, Arsenal are unlikely to spend close to €200m on one player. They must also strengthen other areas of Arteta’s squad.

Atlético have made their position clear. They want Álvarez to stay and believe no offer will change their mind this summer.
