Arsenal are approaching a decisive stage in their pursuit of Bruno Guimarães as Andrea Berta considers whether to improve the club’s rejected offer.
Newcastle United have made clear that they will not allow their captain to leave cheaply, despite the midfielder’s desire to join Mikel Arteta’s side.
Arsenal have already seen a proposal worth around £55million rejected. Further discussions have centred on packages closer to £60million, but Newcastle’s valuation remains nearer £100million.
According to talkSPORT, the difference between the clubs remains substantial. Newcastle have pointed towards recent midfield transfers when assessing the Brazilian’s value.
No agreement is currently in place, and claims that the move will be resolved this week should be treated cautiously. However, Arsenal must soon decide whether Guimarães is worth a significantly improved offer.
Guimarães has made his Arsenal preference clear
The player’s position provides Arsenal with some encouragement.
Guimarães has informed Newcastle that he wants to join Arsenal, according to Sky Sports.
Personal terms are also reportedly agreed in principle, leaving the transfer fee as the main obstacle.
However, Guimarães is not expected to submit a formal transfer request or attempt to force his departure. He remains respectful towards Newcastle and is prepared to stay if the clubs cannot reach an agreement.
That stance prevents the situation from becoming disruptive but also leaves Arsenal with less leverage. Newcastle can reject offers without fearing that their captain will refuse to play or publicly challenge the club.
Guimarães’ current deal runs until 2028, with Newcastle holding an option for another season. The previous £100million release clause is no longer active, giving the Magpies control over negotiations.
As Read Arsenal recently examined, the midfielder’s desire to work with Arteta and compete for major trophies has placed Arsenal in a strong position with the player.
Convincing Newcastle remains a very different challenge.
Berta must decide where Arsenal find value
The valuation gap creates a difficult decision for sporting director Andrea Berta.
Guimarães would bring Premier League experience, leadership and tactical flexibility. He can operate alongside Declan Rice, play deeper or move forward as an aggressive No 8.
His arrival would give Arteta four elite midfield options alongside Rice, Martin Zubimendi and Martin Ødegaard. Arsenal would also gain a player already proven in English football.
However, a package approaching £100million would consume a large part of the club’s remaining budget.
Arsenal are also working on attacking additions, with Morgan Rogers, Julián Álvarez and Bradley Barcola among the high-profile names linked with moves.
Berta’s reported recruitment strategy involves progressing several negotiations before selecting the strongest deal. Paying substantially above Arsenal’s original valuation for Guimarães would therefore represent a departure from his usual value-driven approach.
As Read Arsenal’s latest transfer overview noted, Newcastle’s demands have consistently remained far above the proposals discussed by Arsenal.
The next move belongs to the Gunners.
They can raise their offer and discover whether Newcastle’s public stance softens, or redirect their resources towards a younger and less expensive midfield target.
Guimarães wants the move, but player approval alone will not complete it. Arsenal must now determine how far they are prepared to go.
