Gabriel Martinelli exit update as the Brazilian winger faces uncertain Arsenal future

Much has been made of Arsenal’s summer transfer activity and which players will be leaving given that at least one first-team exit is expected. Gabriel Martinelli’s future is uncertain – but reports have suggested a new deal may be on the cards if he agrees to one condition.

It’s going to be a busy summer for the Gunners regardless of whether they win the Premier League or Champions League before the campaign’s end.

Mikel Arteta is likely to be given a new deal, which would also seen him financially benefit from fresh terms, and a number of targets – Anthony Gordon being one of them – are being linked.

But what about the potential outgoings? It has been previously reported that a senior member of the squad will be exiting out of the Emirates Stadium doors but Martinelli reportedly has the option to stay.

Gabriel Martinelli future update: Could the Brazilian remain at the Emirates?

At the time of writing, the Brazilian forward – who has plundered 62 goals and 35 assists in 269 Gunners outings – will be entering the final year of his contract in the summer.

Is it time to cash in on the 24-year-old’s services before being at risk of losing him on a free transfer or is he a crucial part of Arsenal’s future?

The noise surrounding his future – and Leandro Trossard’s – continues to grow given that Arteta and his entourage are looking to bring in a new left winger ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

The Times, though, has provided an update on Gabriel Martinelli’s future. In their article regarding Arsenal’s interest in Morgan Rogers, they wrote: “Arsenal could sell either of Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli owing to performance and contractual reasons.”

They then reported that Arsenal do have the option to extend Martinelli’s stay in north London by 12 months but that would be on the assumption that he’d assume a bit-part role under Arteta’s guidance.

“Trossard, 31, has a year left on his contract and has been less influential in the second part of the season. Arsenal have an option to extend Martinelli’s contract by one season to 2028 but may offer him a new, longer deal this summer if he is willing to be a squad player.”

It’s safe to say that he’s already doing this role, right? This season, the former Ituano star has started just nine matches in the Premier League – and much of his work has been done at Europe’s top table.

The fact that Arteta clearly wants to upgrade in his position may present itself as bad news for Martinelli and, in the event that he does leave, he will always be remembered as being a key part of the Arsenal revolution.

Does selling Gabriel Martinelli make sense?

On the surface, it does. Arteta and his backroom staff will be tossing and turning over whether to part ways with Martinelli, 24, or Trossard, 31, in the summer to make room for a new left winger.

Of course, Martinelli is far more attractive in terms of how much money his departure would yield. He’s much younger, has plenty of years left in the tank and has proven his ability to operate at the highest level.

In the same breath, Martinelli counts as a homegrown player.

Having arrived in north London in 2019 and spent three or more years at a Premier League club before his 21st birthday, he fits the criteria – and that could come into Arteta’s thinking.

It’ll be more to do with how they suit the squad and the plan moving forward, sure, but that could play a part. Regardless of the outcome, the winger has been a terrific servant throughout his seven-year stay.
