William Saliba’s World Cup ended with an injury as the Arsenal defender was forced off during France’s 2-0 semi-final defeat by Spain.
Saliba went down without contact and appeared to be holding the back of his leg before leaving the pitch after 30 minutes.
Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix replaced him, leaving Arsenal waiting for a clearer diagnosis ahead of the start of pre-season.
The immediate concern surrounds whether the latest problem is connected to the back injury Saliba managed throughout the tournament.
France had repeatedly adjusted his training schedule before the semi-final. Reuters reported that Saliba missed a full team session three days before facing Spain, although he was considered fit enough to start in Dallas.
Arsenal Need Clarity Before Saliba Returns
The full extent of Saliba’s injury has not been confirmed.
He will require further assessment before Arsenal can determine whether he faces a short recovery period or a longer absence. TalkSPORT reported that the defender had struggled with back discomfort during France’s World Cup campaign before being withdrawn against Spain.
Arsenal will not want to rush him back into training after a demanding season.
Saliba played more than 3,700 minutes for club and country during 2025/26. His World Cup run extended his campaign into the middle of July and reduced the recovery period available before Arsenal begin their competitive schedule.
ReadArsenal had already highlighted how Saliba’s recurring back problem created a growing workload concern before France reached the latter stages of the tournament.
The centre-back missed several training sessions but continued to start important matches. France’s medical staff managed his workload rather than removing him from selection completely.
Tuesday’s early withdrawal suggests the situation can no longer be viewed as a routine precaution.
Arsenal will want scan results before deciding when Saliba can return to London Colney. His scheduled post-tournament break may now become an important rehabilitation period.
Arteta Has Defensive Cover But No Direct Replacement
Saliba remains one of Arsenal’s most difficult players to replace.
His pace allows Mikel Arteta to use a high defensive line, while his composure helps Arsenal progress possession when opponents press aggressively.
Gabriel is the established partner on the left of central defence. Riccardo Calafiori, Piero Hincapié and Cristhian Mosquera can also play centrally, giving Arteta several experienced alternatives.
None offers exactly the same profile.
Mosquera may be the most natural right-sided replacement. Hincapié and Calafiori are more comfortable operating from the left, although both can move inside when required.
Arsenal’s defensive depth should prevent an immediate transfer panic. The concern would grow if Saliba requires surgery or faces an extended period on the sidelines.
ReadArsenal previously examined how Gabriel’s earlier World Cup exit reduced one defensive workload risk. The Brazilian should now have a fuller pre-season than Saliba and may be required to provide stability while his regular partner recovers.
Arteta could also use pre-season to test Mosquera alongside Gabriel. Building that partnership early would protect Arsenal if Saliba is unavailable for the Community Shield or opening Premier League fixtures.
Arsenal Cannot Repeat Previous Saliba Mistake
Arsenal already understand the consequences of losing Saliba during a decisive period.
His back injury in 2023 disrupted the club’s title challenge and exposed the importance of his recovery speed within Arteta’s structure.
The current squad is deeper than it was three years ago. Arsenal are no longer relying on one reserve centre-back to cover every absence.
However, depth only helps if Arteta is prepared to use it.
Saliba has carried a demanding workload for several seasons and entered the World Cup with an existing issue. Asking him to return quickly for pre-season would create unnecessary risk.
Arsenal’s first priority is establishing the nature of the injury. The second is giving Saliba enough time to recover fully rather than targeting an artificial return date.
France’s defeat at least ends his tournament commitments. He will not be involved in Sunday’s final, although a third-place match could still be scheduled before his departure from the national-team camp.
The Premier League season remains more than a month away. Arsenal have time to manage the situation carefully.
Saliba’s early withdrawal is still an unwelcome development. Arteta must now prepare his defence without assuming his first-choice centre-back will be ready for the opening weekend.
