Arsenal are reconsidering their pursuit of Bruno Guimaraes after discovering Newcastle United will not sell their captain for around £50m.
The Gunners entered the race after intermediaries indicated that Newcastle could consider an offer near that figure.
However, The Telegraph reports that Newcastle are demanding a fee closer to the £100m Tottenham paid for Sandro Tonali.
Arsenal have discussed proposals worth no more than £60m including add-ons. Newcastle also want the majority of any fee paid up front.
Arsenal face expensive Guimaraes decision
Guimaraes remains open to joining the Premier League champions and has informed Newcastle of his desire to explore the move.
However, the 28-year-old will not attempt to force his way out unless Arsenal submit an offer close to Newcastle’s valuation.
ReadArsenal previously reported that Guimaraes had agreed personal terms while the clubs remained far apart on price.
Mikel Arteta admires the Brazil international, who would provide Premier League experience, leadership and flexibility across the midfield.
The financial commitment remains difficult to justify.
Guimaraes turns 29 later this year and would reportedly command wages close to £300,000 per week. Arsenal must also manage their squad-cost limits after another expensive summer.
His Newcastle contract runs until 2028, with the club holding an option for another year. That gives Newcastle little reason to accept a discounted fee.
Arsenal must now decide whether Guimaraes offers enough immediate quality to warrant an £80m-plus bid or whether their money would be better spent elsewhere.
The player’s preference keeps the transfer alive. Newcastle’s position leaves Arsenal needing to make a far larger commitment than they first expected.
