Graeme Souness has branded Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice “limited” following England’s World Cup semi-final defeat by Argentina.
Rice started alongside Elliot Anderson as Thomas Tuchel’s side moved within minutes of reaching their first World Cup final since 1966.
However, the 27-year-old was withdrawn during the closing stages before Argentina scored twice to secure a 2-1 victory.
Speaking on Sports Uncensored, Souness claimed Rice and Anderson did not possess enough quality in possession to control the game.
The former Liverpool midfielder described both players as “steady Eddies” and suggested Rice could be better suited to playing at centre-back.
Terry defends Rice after Souness criticism
John Terry rejected Souness’ assessment and argued that Rice remains a world-class defensive midfielder.
The former England captain compared Rice’s role to those previously performed by Claude Makelele and N’Golo Kante at Chelsea.
Terry also said Rice was the player he would have wanted protecting England’s defence during the closing stages against Argentina.
Souness acknowledged Rice’s athleticism, attitude and commitment but maintained that he does not influence matches enough with his passing.
The criticism comes after a demanding tournament for the Arsenal midfielder. Rice had been managing a hamstring and lower-back issue before illness disrupted his preparations for the quarter-final against Norway.
He recovered to start the semi-final but was replaced after 82 minutes as Tuchel attempted to protect England’s narrow lead. England then conceded twice during a dramatic late collapse.
As Read Arsenal reported following the match, Rice’s availability offered Arsenal encouragement after his fitness concerns earlier in the tournament.
The debate is unlikely to alter his standing under Mikel Arteta. Rice played a central role as Arsenal won the Premier League and reached the Champions League final last season.
