  • Arsenal are being heavily linked with a move for Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers
  • The Villans aren’t eager to sell the player.
  • Despite that, the Gunners feel they are in pole position to land Rogers.

Arsenal believe they are in ‘pole position’ to sign Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers this summer.

Rogers enjoyed another outstanding season for Villa in 2025/26, scoring 14 goals and providing eleven assists across all competitions. This form has unsurprisingly sparked widespread interest in the England international, with the Gunners, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Chelsea all said to be monitoring the player’s situation.

Villa are intent on keeping Rogers, although a major update has just emerged on this front which appears to suggest that Arsenal are confident of getting a deal over the line.

Since signing from Middlesbrough in January 2023, Rogers has developed into an excellent Premier League player. In the last two seasons, he’s contributed to 52 goals for Villa across all competitions, and is renowned for his powerful running through midfield and his spectacular shooting from distance.

Arteta is a huge admirer of the player and wants to add these attributes to his team ahead of next season. According to the Mirror, Arsenal feel they are in ‘pole position’ to land the 23-year-old.

While Villa will push hard to keep hold of their prized possession, Rogers is keen on a switch to the Emirates, favouring North London over other clubs reportedly in the race to land him. Arsenal represent the most attractive option to the ex-Lincoln City man, and thus, the Gunners’ hierarchy feel they are well placed.

Arteta believes Rogers can operate as a number ten or as a left-winger, with this versatility making him a particularly appealing candidate for the Spaniard. Villa reportedly need to comply with financial regulations, so it’s possible that they’d sanction the player’s departure for a somewhat modest £80 million.

Should Arsenal sign Morgan Rogers?

Arsenal fans are certainly on board with a move for Rogers, but is he really the man to elevate Arteta’s side’s attack next season? The jury is out.

While he boasts some outstanding attributes, such as his ball-striking and aggressive carrying through the middle of the pitch, he also lacks certain qualities needed in an Arteta team. Arsenal don’t create moments of transition like Villa do, where Rogers is able to thrive.

Instead, the Gunners are regularly in settled possession against a deep block – a game state that is ill-suited to the Englishman. He struggles to create chances and separation in tight spaces, while he lacks the creative passing ability to run an Arsenal attack against teams that sit deep.

Furthermore, Arteta already has Martin Odegaard, Eberechi Eze and Max Dowman at his disposal. He doesn’t need another number ten, or a number ten who can be pushed out wide, but rather needs a natural, explosive winger.

Arsenal need to be careful with this piece of recruitment.
