Arsenal host Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday evening in the Champions League round of 16, with Mikel Arteta’s side looking to progress into the quarter-final stage for the third consecutive season and, in turn, keep their quadruple hopes alive.
The Gunners beat Everton in dramatic circumstances on Saturday evening, courtesy of late goals from Viktor Gyokeres and Max Dowman. With Manchester City being held by West Ham United on the same night, the North Londoners now sit nine points clear at the summit of the Premier League, with just seven matches left to play.
In the midst of the wild celebrations at the Emirates, Arteta must have been somewhat concerned about just how much the game would’ve taken out of his players, both emotionally and physically. With the crucial Leverkusen second leg on Tuesday, he’ll need to find a way to re-energise his players.
Leverkusen were embroiled in their own frenzied encounter over the weekend, drawing 1-1 with the imperious Bayern Munich at the BayArena. While Bayern finished the game with nine men, after Nicolas Jackson and Luis Diaz were both sent off, die Werkself performed admirably throughout, limiting the Bundesliga champions to few clear-cut chances.
It’s clear that Leverkusen will be stern opposition for Arsenal in N5, and Arteta will likely have to confront this challenge without his captain, Martin Odegaard, who continues to struggle with a knee injury. Leandro Trossard may be available, however, while Jurrien Timber is also likely to be involved after coming off on Saturday.
