Arsenal visit Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday evening in the Champions League round of 16, looking to set themselves up for a comfortable return leg at the Emirates next week, as Mikel Arteta’s side continue their pursuit of an unprecedented quadruple.
The Gunners beat Mansfield Town on Saturday afternoon, in what proved to be a chaotic affair in the East Midlands. Stunning strikes from Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze cancelled out Will Evans’ equaliser, sealing the North Londoners’ progression into the last four of English football’s oldest competition.
Meanwhile, Leverkusen were embroiled in their own frenetic encounter over the weekend, drawing 3-3 with Freiburg at Europa-Park-Stadion. Kasper Hjulmand’s side are pushing for a place in the top four of the Bundesliga, but currently sit three points behind fourth-placed Stuttgart. They face Bayern Munich at home in between their two clashes with Arsenal.
Mikel Arteta should have William Saliba available for this encounter, with the Frenchman expected to be involved after missing the trips to Brighton and Mansfield through injury. Meanwhile, Leandro Trossard and Riccardo Calafiori are doubts after being forced off the pitch in Nottinghamshire with fitness issues.
Elsewhere, Ben White and Martin Odegaard’s respective fitness status’ are unclear, while Mikel Merino remains a long-term absentee.
Opta Analyst’s model has Arsenal’s chances of progressing into the quarter-finals at 86.7%, and thus, Arteta will be confident in his side’s prospects of winning in the Rhineland.
