Wenger – How we will combat Lewandowski threat

Arsenal take on Bayern Munich in London on Tuesday in a UEFA Champions League match that is pretty much a must-win for the Gunners if they have any hopes of getting into the knockout rounds of the tournament. They lost both of their first two matches to Olympiacos and Dinamo Zagreb, so the three points that they could potentially grab on Tuesday would be vital. But, there is one man playing for the visiting team that manager Arsene Wenger will have most of his focus on: Robert Lewandowski. He spoke to the media about how he will attempt to stop the Polish target man.

First of all the best way to combat him is for us to have the ball. After that you have to be shrewd with him because inside the box he is outstanding, because of his technique, his finishing, his movement inside the box.

Lewandowski has reached double-digit goals in his past few games, meaning that he is extremely confident and playing what is almost certainly the best football of his career, so Wenger and the Arsenal defence will have to have eyes on him at all times. The boss also indicated who will be tasked with defending the Polish superstar.

That’s where we need the experience of Mertesacker and Koscielny to deal with that because that will be one of the important things on the night.

Koscielny’s pace and athleticism mixed with the solidity, strength, and awareness of his German teammate should combine well to hold down Lewandowski, but he is unpredictable and in great form so naturally will be awfully hard to stop. For Arsenal’s sake, fans should hope the team can translate their recent Premier League form into the Champions League to beat the German giants.

matchday.
