Takehiro Tomiyasu is training with Crystal Palace as the former Arsenal defender works towards finding a new club. However, Palace have not opened talks over a contract with the Japan international.
The free agent has joined Pierre Sage’s squad at their pre-season camp in Como. Palace are allowing Tomiyasu to train and improve his fitness while several first-team players remain unavailable after the World Cup.
TalkSPORT reports that Tomiyasu’s presence should not be viewed as an indication that a transfer is close. The arrangement was helped by his friendship with Palace midfielder and Japan team-mate Daichi Kamada.

Tomiyasu could feature in a Palace friendly during the camp, but no discussions have taken place over a permanent agreement. The defender is also attracting interest from other clubs in England and Europe.
The 27-year-old became a free agent when his short-term Ajax contract expired on 30 June. Ajax signed him in December after he had spent several months recovering from a serious knee injury. He made nine appearances during his spell in Amsterdam.
Tomiyasu left Arsenal by mutual agreement in July 2025. He had played only six minutes during his final season in north London after another knee problem required surgery.
His fitness record ultimately made it difficult for Mikel Arteta to plan around him. ReadArsenal previously examined why Arsenal moved on from Tomiyasu, despite the defender remaining popular with supporters.
Tomiyasu made 84 appearances after joining Arsenal from Bologna in 2021. He operated at centre-back and on both sides of the defence, but injuries disrupted each of his final three seasons at the club.
Training with Palace gives Tomiyasu an opportunity to complete a full pre-season programme. A return to the Premier League remains possible, although his time with the Eagles is currently only a fitness arrangement.
