Arsenal have secured the future of highly rated academy defender Josh Ogunnaike after the 18-year-old signed his first professional contract.
The versatile defender has committed his future to the Gunners following five years in the club’s academy system.
Arsenal confirmed Ogunnaike’s new professional terms, with the agreement still subject to the completion of regulatory processes.
Ogunnaike can operate at left-back or centre-back. His physical strength, defensive versatility and progress through the age groups have established him as one of Hale End’s promising defensive prospects.
Ogunnaike earns next Arsenal opportunity
The teenager made 40 appearances across three age groups and six competitions during the 2025/26 campaign.
He scored his first UEFA Youth League goal and became a regular starter for Arsenal’s Under-21s before the end of the season. Ogunnaike also trained with Mikel Arteta’s first-team squad as his development accelerated.
His new deal resolves the uncertainty which followed the expiry of his scholarship terms. Read Arsenal previously reported that negotiations with Ogunnaike had reached a standstill, with the defender absent from the opening stages of Under-21 pre-season training.
Ogunnaike described signing the contract alongside his family as an “amazing feeling”. He also thanked the coaches and staff who have supported him since he joined Arsenal in 2021.
The defender must now establish himself as a leading figure for the Under-21s. His ability to cover two positions could also earn him further opportunities to train with Arteta’s senior group.
Arsenal recently handed goalkeeper Remi Lupinski his first professional contract as the club continue securing the futures of their leading academy players.
Ogunnaike’s agreement represents another positive step for Hale End after Chelsea and Manchester City showed interest in several Arsenal prospects this summer.
