Arsenal may sacrifice major transfer after William Saliba injury

William Saliba’s back injury could force Arsenal to change a transfer plan which appeared settled only days ago.

The France international left Tuesday’s World Cup semi-final defeat by Spain after 30 minutes. Saliba had managed discomfort throughout the tournament before the problem worsened in Dallas.

Further examinations will determine the next step. Surgery is reportedly considered the most likely option, with Arsenal preparing for a possible absence of four or five months.

That timeline could keep Saliba out until November or December. He would miss the Community Shield, the opening months of Arsenal’s Premier League title defence and the beginning of their Champions League campaign.

The Times reports that Arsenal are considering back surgery for Saliba, although no final medical decision has been announced.

Saliba injury could change Arsenal’s transfer priorities

Arsenal entered the summer focused on improving midfield and adding another elite attacker.

Morgan Rogers remains their preferred attacking target, while Bradley Barcola is being considered as an alternative. The Gunners have also pursued Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães.

Saliba’s injury creates a more urgent question.

Mikel Arteta has several defenders who can play centrally. Cristhian Mosquera is the most natural right-sided replacement, while Jurriën Timber and Ben White can move inside.

Riccardo Calafiori and Piero Hincapié offer further depth, but both are more comfortable on the left.

None provides Saliba’s combination of recovery pace, strength and composure when defending large spaces.

As Read Arsenal reported following the latest medical update, the club are preparing for a lengthy absence while waiting for the results of further assessments.

Arsenal cannot treat a possible return in December as a firm date. Back surgery can produce uncertain recovery periods, while Saliba has already carried the issue through several months of football.

Arsenal may need to sacrifice Guimarães pursuit

Arsenal are unlikely to have unlimited funds for a centre-back, Guimarães and a leading attacker.

The Saliba situation makes the midfield deal the most logical one to reconsider.

Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi and Martin Ødegaard already give Arteta a strong starting unit. Christian Nørgaard wants to remain for another year, while Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly can provide further options.

Guimarães would improve Arsenal, but Newcastle’s valuation is expected to remain high. Committing another substantial fee to midfield would leave less room to address an immediate defensive weakness.

A football.london analysis argues that Arsenal may have to sacrifice one planned transfer to ensure Arteta receives adequate cover for Saliba.

Pausing the Guimarães pursuit would not be an admission that the Brazilian is unnecessary. It would reflect the changing needs of the squad.

Arsenal could retain their attacking plans while relying on the midfield which won the Premier League last season.

Arsenal need more than short-term cover

Signing another centre-back should not be viewed solely as an emergency reaction.

Saliba has dealt with recurring back problems before. His absence during the final months of the 2022/23 campaign exposed how heavily Arsenal’s defensive structure depended on him.

The current squad is deeper, but the same tactical reliance remains.

Arteta needs a defender capable of playing on the right of central defence, defending one-on-one and progressing possession under pressure. A versatile right-back who can also cover centrally would provide further value.

Read Arsenal previously highlighted how Saliba’s workload became a growing concern after he continued playing through discomfort during France’s World Cup run.

Mosquera deserves an opportunity during pre-season. However, asking him to replace Saliba across the opening months of a title defence would carry considerable risk.

Arsenal’s original transfer list was built before the severity of Saliba’s condition became clear.

Andrea Berta must now adjust. Another marquee midfielder would be attractive, but protecting Arteta’s defence has become the more pressing priority.
