Arsenal are looking to bolster their frontline in the transfer window this summer, with Andrea Berta set to rival Bayern Munich for the signing of a highly-rated young striker.

The Gunners may be embroiled in an intense Premier League title race, but they aren’t prepared to rest on their laurels. Berta and Arteta have set their sights on a number of top players across Europe, with the feeling being that their attack needs to improve if they’re to sustain their spell at the top.

Julian Alvarez is Arsenal’s primary forward target, although they are lining up moves for several alternatives, in the likely scenario that a deal for the Argentine proves too expensive.

Arsenal battling Bayern Munich for £87m striker

Gabriel Jesus is expected to leave Arsenal at the end of the season, while Kai Havertz continues to struggle with his fitness, and Viktor Gyokeres continues to divide opinion. Thus, the situation around the Gunners’ striker department is far from certain heading into next season.

It’s therefore not a surprise that Arsenal are considering making a move for one of Europe’s hottest striker prospects. The North Londoners are understood to be monitoring Bayer Leverkusen’s Christian Kofane, although the mooted £87.3 million price tag may deter Berta and other potential suitors.

Bayern Munich are also said to be in the race to sign Kofane, with the German giants intent on adding a new back-up centre-forward to Harry Kane as they expect Nicolas Jackson to return to Chelsea at the end of his loan in Bavaria.

Bild Journalist and Bundesliga insider, Christian Falk, has revealed that Bayern are extremely wary of Arsenal’s interest in Kofane. Speaking to CF Bayern Insider, the reporter suggested that Vincent Kompany’s pursuit of the Cameroonian is ‘getting hard’ because of the Gunners’ presence in the battle to land the player.

“It is TRUE: There is interest in Christian Kofane and he’s on the list,” he said.

“Christoph Freund, the sporting director, was asked about this topic, and he didn’t deny it.

“That said, Bayern aren’t searching intensely in this particular position. There are still rumours about Fisnik Asllani of Hoffenheim, who’s also on this list.

“In the end, Bayern want a left-winger, they want to buy a right-back, and in the end, if there’s money left [although Bayern would then have to sell players to get some money in], then there would be a chance for such players. Of course, if Arsenal’s at the table, so it’s getting hard!”

Arsenal shouldn’t pay £87m for Christian Kofane

Kofane has enjoyed an impressive debut season in the Bundesliga, although his output doesn’t suggest he should be completing a blockbuster summer transfer just yet. The youngster has scored just seven goals and provided five assists in 41 appearances across all competitions for Leverkusen this term.

That said, he only turns 20 in June, and showed impressive physical acumen when he unsettled William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes against Arsenal in the Champions League last month.

He certainly has the potential to develop into a special talent, and Arsenal are right to be monitoring the progress of such a promising young player. However, they certainly shouldn’t be investing upwards of £87 million on a striker who is yet to even light up the Bundesliga.

If a more reasonable fee can be agreed upon, then it should be considered by the North Londoners. However, at the mooted price tag, they should avoid Kofane at all costs.
