Mikel Arteta and Arsenal – who recently lost 2-0 to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final – are still strong in their pursuit of ending their silverware drought and Sandro Tonali of Newcastle United is among their primary summer targets.

The Gunners, who are currently sat at the top of the Premier League, are also in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and the Champions League.

Arteta, since replacing Unai Emery in 2019, has taken one step closer to etching his name in Emirates Stadium history by winning a Premier League title.

But the plan isn’t stopping there – with reports linking the Londoners to Tonali, who is also a target for the likes of Manchester United this summer. The Italian, however, is being implored to reject a summer move.

Sandro Tonali implored to stay at Newcastle amid Arsenal interest

As he continues to impress for Eddie Howe’s Magpies, who are struggling amid the strong competition in England’s top flight, Sandro Tonali has been courted by the Gunners for quite some time now.

The 25-year-old, who arrived from AC Milan in the summer of 2023, has played 47 matches for Newcastle across the entire campaign.

His performances have made him one of the most coveted engine room operators in the market and his displays have resulted in speculation over his future. In fact, reports have suggested that he will leave Newcastle – currently 12th – if they don’t secure European football of any kind.

Amid interest from the likes of Arsenal and United, Marco Materazzi has weighed in on the prospect of Tonali getting a big move this summer. Per GOAL, he said:

“Sandro Tonali can play in any team in Italy and England but he has to decide if he wants to stay at Newcastle United because they believed in him.

“The city and the fans and the club believed in him and stuck by him. I would like him to stay at Newcastle and build his legacy.”

Obviously, Newcastle do not have that strong of a pull – especially in comparison to two of England’s biggest forces in the transfer market – but Materazzi makes a very valid point.

Howe and his entourage will be keen to see the midfielder stay in the northeast, of course, but can the Gunners tempt him with a move to the Emirates Stadium. It remains to be seen but he could stay and become a cult hero at Newcastle, coudn’t he?

Could Arsenal look at a Tonali alternative?

Getting their hands on Sandro Tonali would always be a tricky deal to strike because of Arsenal being direct rivals to his current employers – and that would be the case in terms of United also being interested in his services.

Leon Goretzka, who has green-lit a move to Arsenal, is nearing the top of their midfield targets by virtue of being experienced and a free agent.

Eduardo Camavinga of Real Madrid is also a true option for the Gunners, who could offer the Frenchman Champions League football moving forwards – and that’s what could see them hijack Liverpool’s move for the midfielder.

At the time of writing, Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi form their two-man partnership in the midfield but having another Premier League-level talent as an option would add to their ability to win trophies and stay at the top.
