Sokratis could leave Arsenal this summer – why they might not miss him

Arsenal defender Sokratis is ready to leave Arsenal if he isn’t wanted this summer, according to Goal, with Pablo Mari the ready made replacement for the Gunners.

With 18 months remaining on his contract at the Emirates, it is being reported that Sokratis could throw in the towel on his Arsenal career, having fallen out of favour under Mikel Arteta.

The Greece international hasn’t played in any of Arsenal’s last five Premier League games, with Shkodran Mustafi and David Luiz preferred as the centre-back pairing.

Following an impressive debut from Mari against Portsmouth on Monday evening, with Arteta praising the Spaniard’s performance, Sokratis could see his game time decrease even further.

However, with Arsenal having a permanent option in Mari’s loan contract, the Gunners shouldn’t really miss Sokratis if he does decide to leave the club.

Calum Chambers is currently out injured but he could rank above Sokratis in the pecking order once he returns, while William Saliba will join the club when his loan deal with Saint-Etienne expires in the summer.

Meanwhile, both Mustafi and Luiz have performed better at the back this season, with the duo ranking above Sokratis in defensive clearances, interceptions and offsides won, as shown by WhoScored.

Should Mari join the club permanently, and with Saliba and Chambers set to become available in the future, Sokratis might not be missed at the Emirates after all.
