Arsenal are looking to bolster their ranks this summer after winning the Premier League title under Mikel Arteta last season.
The Gunners have been heavily linked with a move for Bruno Guimaraes, who has become one of the best midfielders in world football after his contributions for Newcastle United and Brazil.
The Magpies won’t part with their captain without a fight, though, especially after losing Anthony Gordon to Barcelona.
And now, Newcastle United icon Alan Shearer has made a bold transfer prediction on the Brazil international.
Shearer says Guimaraes will stay at Newcastle United
Since moving to the club from Lyon, the talented midfielder has been appointed club captain and has become the reference point of Eddie Howe’s project at the club.
Arsenal have had one approach swiftly knocked back and could well make another this month.
However, Shearer feels Guimaraes will remain at the club, adding that most of the talk about his departure on social media is largely ‘trash.’
“I think it would be a really poor look for Newcastle to sell their best player,” said Shearer to Betfair via Metro.
“You can see what he’s doing for Brazil in this World Cup. I think he’s been one of their best players.
“He is a brilliant talent. And with Anthony Gordon going, I think it would be a really poor look if Newcastle were to sell Bruno. And it would not go down well with the fans.
“I don’t see it happening. I’d be surprised if it were to happen. I hope it’s just paper talk and there’s no truth in that because it would be a big blow to Newcastle. There’d be a lot of angry fans if he were to go.
“I think it’s even more so now because of social media and everyone has an opinion and everyone can say what they want. 99% of it is going to be trash, and I do hope it’s trash about Bruno.”
Arsenal may have to look elsewhere
As a player, Arsenal can’t do much better than Guimaraes as he has all the qualities to succeed in Arteta’s system.
However, as we mentioned earlier, he is Newcastle’s biggest asset. Losing him would essentially put a pin on their ambitious project to eventually win the Premier League by 2030 and also set a dangerous precedent for future outgoings.
Additionally, Sandro Tonali – a one-time Arsenal target – has also been linked with a potential departure.
Arsenal fans are allowed to dream, but we can’t see a situation where the Magpies part with both Guimaraes and Tonali in the same summer, especially after already losing Gordon to Barcelona.
