Winners and losers from Jeremy Monga’s potential transfer to Arsenal, including £6m star

Share

At a Glance:

  • Arsenal are close to agreeing terms with Leicester City’s Jeremy Monga.
  • The Gunners are eager to sign the youngster valued at £10 million.
  • Here are four players who would be impacted by the prospective signing of Monga.

Arsenal are reportedly pursuing Leicester City wonderkid Jeremy Monga this summer, as Andrea Berta looks to strengthen Mikel Arteta’s squad ahead of next season.

The Gunners want to bolster their ranks in the wide areas, with a focus on the left-hand side specifically. Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard are both out of contract next summer, and thus, it’s a natural time for the North Londoners to overhaul this position.

Bradley Barcola has been mooted as a target for Arsenal, although they’ll need more than one new option on this side if Martinelli and Trossard both depart. The Gunners want to sign Monga, who is expected to cost in the region of £10 million.

With that said, here are four Arsenal players who would be impacted by the signing of Monga.

Winners from Arsenal signing Jeremy Monga

Max Dowman

The right side of Arsenal’s attack is sorted for the foreseeable future. Max Dowman looks likely to develop into a superstar and will likely succeed Martin Odegaard as Arsenal’s right eight, playing alongside Bukayo Saka for several years.

The left-hand side is much less clear, although if Monga arrives, he can take this mantle. The Gunners would then have two of the hottest prospects in English football coming through at the same time, and the pair would be set up to dominate in red and white, owning their respective sides.

Dowman will also have a player in his age bracket developing in the first team alongside him, which can only be good from a soft factor perspective.

Myles Lewis-Skelly

Arsenal are clearly trying to build the next iteration of their team whilst having the current iteration in place. Myles Lewis-Skelly is part of that, and if Monga arrives, he’ll be able to start forming a left-sided partnership with the youngster in lesser matches next season.

Lewis-Skelly has the passing ability to start becoming a more influential figure in the final third. The issue he’s had on this front is that those on the left wing haven’t been effective at receiving his passes.

Monga will excel in this aspect, allowing Lewis-Skelly’s overall influence to grow.

Losers from Arsenal signing Jeremy Monga

Gabriel Martinelli

With all the reporting suggesting that the left wing is a priority for Arsenal this summer, the likelihood is that Monga won’t be the marquee addition. The Gunners need an experienced, top class player to take over this position, and as exciting as the teenager is, he probably isn’t ready for that role.

However, this does spell bad news for Gabriel Martinelli, who signed for Arsenal for just £6 million back in 2019. If Monga and another left forward arrive in North London this summer, the Brazilian immediately becomes surplus to requirements.

This might be the end of the road for Martinelli at Arsenal.

Leandro Trossard

Like Martinelli, Monga and another left-winger, probably spells the end of Leandro Trossard in North London. If the other player is Barcola or a similar profile to the Frenchman, then there could be a case to keep hold of the Belgian.

Arteta likes having the option of a possession-heavy left sider who essentially plays as a left ten. Trossard provides this.

That said, the presence of Eberechi Eze in the squad probably negates the need for Trossard. Last season, it seemed as though Arteta was gradually setting up for Eze to be used on the left, by deploying Trossard in a narrower role.

Eze could finally be used in this position, with Monga understudying him.

matchday.
