Manchester City have reportedly moved to the front of the race for Ayyoub Bouaddi, leaving Arsenal with a decision over their long-standing interest in the Lille midfielder.
David Ornstein reports City are pushing to sign the 18-year-old following his impressive performances for Morocco at the World Cup.
Lille are understood to value Bouaddi at around €100m after his reputation grew further during the tournament. City want to add him directly to Enzo Maresca’s first-team squad rather than send him back to France on loan.
Paris Saint-Germain are no longer considered serious contenders, giving City a clearer route towards an agreement.
The latest report on City’s pursuit places the Premier League champions in a strong position. However, no agreement has yet been reached with Lille or the player.
Arsenal have tracked Bouaddi closely
Arsenal’s interest is not a late response to Bouaddi’s World Cup performances.
The Gunners have followed his development for more than a year and were reported to have opened talks over a possible transfer in June.
As Read Arsenal reported last month, Bouaddi had already emerged as a serious midfield option before his value rose during Morocco’s progress through the tournament.
The teenager became Lille’s youngest senior player when he made his debut at 16. He has since accumulated considerable first-team experience in Ligue 1 and European competition.
His composure in possession has attracted particular attention. Bouaddi completed 91 per cent of his passes during Morocco’s World Cup opener against Brazil and found a team-mate with every attempted pass into the final third.
Sky Sports has confirmed Arsenal are among the English clubs monitoring him, alongside Manchester United. City’s interest now appears more advanced than either rival’s.
Bouaddi’s age and technical profile would fit Arsenal’s recent recruitment model. He can receive the ball under pressure, progress possession and cover several central midfield roles.
The asking price creates a more difficult calculation.
City spending raises the stakes for Arsenal
City have already paid £116m for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson this summer. Their willingness to pursue Bouaddi as another major addition reflects Maresca’s planned midfield rebuild.
Tijjani Reijnders, Mateo Kovacic and Nico Gonzalez all face uncertainty over their long-term roles at the Etihad. Bouaddi would offer City a younger option capable of developing alongside Anderson.
Arsenal’s priorities currently lie elsewhere. Andrea Berta is working on moves for Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães and Atletico Madrid forward Julián Álvarez.
The Gunners have made progress in both pursuits, although neither transfer is close to completion. Their expenditure on those deals could determine whether another expensive midfielder remains realistic.
Read Arsenal’s latest transfer-window assessment outlined the distance between Arsenal and Newcastle over Guimarães, with the Gunners’ proposed figure well below Newcastle’s valuation.
Bouaddi would represent a different type of investment. Guimarães is an established Premier League midfielder expected to make an immediate impact, while the Lille teenager offers greater long-term potential.
Arsenal must decide how highly Bouaddi ranks
Arsenal cannot pursue every player they admire, particularly when prices reach close to €100m.
Arteta’s midfield already contains Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi and Martin Odegaard. A major move for Guimarães would make another high-value central addition difficult to justify this summer.
City’s acceleration may still force Arsenal to clarify their position sooner than planned. Waiting could allow a direct rival to secure one of Europe’s most highly rated young midfielders without serious competition.
Bouaddi’s development will not be complete at 18, and Lille’s valuation carries clear risk. His World Cup performances have nevertheless shown why Arsenal maintained their interest for so long.
City are now prepared to act on their admiration. Arsenal must decide whether Bouaddi remains a genuine target or another name they are willing to watch move elsewhere.
