Arsenal Women have completed five permanent signings inside two weeks, giving Renée Slegers greater control, flexibility and attacking depth following a difficult title defence.
Georgia Stanway, Selina Cerci, Géraldine Reuteler, Ona Batlle and Lisa Baum have arrived since the start of July.
The recruitment covers almost every area of the team. Stanway and Reuteler reshape central midfield, Cerci adds proven goals, Batlle strengthens both full-back positions and Baum provides another direct wide threat.
Four of the five were available without transfer fees following the expiry of their contracts. Arsenal only paid a reported fee for Baum, who joined from RB Leipzig.
The speed and spread of the business show a clear plan. Arsenal have not simply tried to replace Beth Mead and Manuela Zinsberger with similar players.
Instead, Slegers has been given several new combinations and a squad capable of changing shape without a significant drop in quality.
Who Have Arsenal Women Signed?
Arsenal’s first arrival was England midfielder Stanway, whose move from Bayern Munich was confirmed on 3 July.
Cerci followed from Hoffenheim three days later. Reuteler then arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt before Arsenal completed the standout defensive signing of Batlle from Barcelona.
Baum became the fifth addition on 14 July.
| Player | Previous Club | Position | Age |
|---|---|---|---|
| Georgia Stanway | Bayern Munich | Central midfield | 27 |
| Selina Cerci | Hoffenheim | Forward | 26 |
| Géraldine Reuteler | Eintracht Frankfurt | Midfield/forward | 27 |
| Ona Batlle | Barcelona | Full-back | 27 |
| Lisa Baum | RB Leipzig | Winger | 19 |
The group has a useful balance.
Stanway, Cerci, Reuteler and Batlle are established internationals in their peak years. Baum represents a longer-term investment who can develop without carrying the pressure of immediately transforming the team.
Arsenal’s official transfer tracker confirms all five additions during an unusually active start to the summer.
Stanway And Reuteler Give Arsenal A New Midfield
Stanway may have the biggest immediate influence.
The England international arrives after four successful seasons with Bayern, where she developed into a midfielder comfortable controlling possession and competing in physically demanding matches.
She can play as a deeper midfielder or move forward as a No 8. Her passing range should help Arsenal progress the ball more consistently, while her aggression gives Slegers another option when matches become stretched.
Arsenal’s announcement of Stanway’s signing highlighted four consecutive Bundesliga titles and her experience in major international tournaments.
Reuteler adds a different type of versatility.
The Switzerland international can operate in midfield, from a wider position or behind the central striker. She has spent much of her career moving between those roles rather than remaining fixed in one area.
ReadArsenal previously examined how Reuteler gives Slegers another flexible senior option.
That flexibility should help Arsenal avoid becoming predictable.
Slegers could use Stanway as the main controller with Reuteler playing higher. Reuteler could also drift from the left into central areas, allowing the full-back to provide width.
Arsenal confirmed that Reuteler had made 184 appearances during her time with Eintracht Frankfurt. Her experience should allow her to contribute immediately rather than requiring a prolonged development period.
Together, Stanway and Reuteler give Arsenal more ball progression and greater scoring potential from midfield.
Cerci Adds Competition Around Russo
Arsenal already had several recognised forwards before Cerci arrived.
Alessia Russo, Stina Blackstenius, Chloe Kelly and Caitlin Foord offer different qualities, but Slegers needed another player capable of attacking the penalty area and producing consistent domestic goals.
Cerci scored 34 times during two seasons with Hoffenheim. She is comfortable leading the line, making runs beyond another forward or attacking from a slightly wider starting position.
Arsenal described her as a player who brings goals, movement and intensity when confirming the deal. The official announcement presented her as a permanent addition following the end of her Hoffenheim spell.
ReadArsenal has already looked at how Cerci gives Arsenal another direct final-third weapon.
Her arrival does not necessarily threaten Russo’s place immediately.
It gives Slegers more freedom to rotate, protect players during crowded weeks and use two central forwards when Arsenal need a goal.
Cerci could play alongside Russo, replace her without forcing a major tactical change or offer a more direct option against teams defending with a high line.
Her movement may also create space for Stanway and Reuteler to arrive from midfield.
Batlle Raises The Level At Full-Back
Batlle is arguably the most accomplished of Arsenal’s summer arrivals.
The Spain international joins after winning two Champions League titles with Barcelona. She was also part of the team that won the 2023 World Cup.
Batlle can play on either side and has previous Women’s Super League experience with Manchester United.
That combination of versatility and proven quality makes her more than a depth signing. She should compete for an immediate starting place.
Arsenal’s official confirmation described Batlle as a permanent signing and underlined her record at Barcelona and international level.
ReadArsenal previously explained why Batlle’s arrival changes expectations around Arsenal’s rebuild.
Her ability to play from the right or left gives Slegers cover against injuries without relying on a makeshift solution.
Batlle is also comfortable moving into central areas during possession. That could allow Arsenal to create an extra midfielder while the opposite full-back pushes forward.
She provides the technical security required to play through pressure and the recovery speed needed when possession is lost.
Arsenal have added a defender capable of improving their build-up play as well as their work without the ball.
Baum Is Arsenal’s Long-Term Attacking Investment
Baum is the least experienced arrival but may carry the greatest long-term upside.
The 19-year-old joined from RB Leipzig after scoring six goals in 26 appearances last season. She will wear the number 19 shirt.
Born in Tanzania and raised in Germany, Baum began her senior career with Hamburg before moving to Leipzig.
She is most comfortable receiving the ball wide and running directly at defenders. That profile gives Arsenal another route against compact teams that restrict central space.
Slegers described her as a forward with direct intent and athleticism when Arsenal confirmed the transfer.
ReadArsenal covered how Baum adds pace and another aggressive wide option.
She should not be expected to replace Mead’s experience immediately.
Baum instead gives Slegers a young player who can be introduced gradually around Foord, Kelly, Olivia Smith and Michelle Agyemang.
Her arrival also creates greater competition in the wide positions. Arsenal can now rotate without asking the same attackers to carry heavy workloads across the WSL and Champions League.
The fee reflects belief in what Baum could become rather than only what she offers now.
How Could Arsenal Line Up?
The five signings create several possible structures.
In a 4-3-3, Stanway could operate at the base or as one of two advanced midfielders. Reuteler could play alongside her or move into the front three.
Batlle can start on either side of the defence. Cerci can rotate with Russo centrally, while Baum competes for minutes from the wing.
A possible team could include Daphne van Domselaar in goal, Batlle at full-back and Stanway controlling midfield. Reuteler could then operate between the lines behind Russo, with Foord or Kelly providing width.
Slegers could also use a 4-2-3-1, pairing Stanway with another central midfielder and allowing Reuteler to play as the No 10.
Against deeper opponents, Cerci and Russo could feature together. Arsenal would then have two penalty-box targets supported by attacking full-backs.
The value of the recruitment lies in those choices.
Slegers no longer needs one structure to suit every opponent. She can change the midfield balance, add another striker or use Batlle’s versatility to alter the build-up shape.
Have Arsenal Done Enough To Challenge For The Title?
Arsenal’s opening business has been impressive.
They have signed four established internationals without transfer fees and invested in one of Germany’s leading young attackers.
The squad now has more quality in central midfield, greater competition up front and an elite addition at full-back.
Mead’s departure still removes a significant figure from the dressing room. Zinsberger’s exit also changes the goalkeeping group, although Van Domselaar has already established herself as first choice.
Further business cannot be ruled out, especially if more players leave before the window closes.
However, Arsenal have already addressed several weaknesses without dismantling the core of Slegers’ team.
The next stage is integration.
None of the five additions has played a competitive match for Arsenal. Their reputations and previous records will mean little if the team cannot develop partnerships quickly.
On paper, Slegers has a stronger and more adaptable squad.
Stanway can control matches, Reuteler connects midfield and attack, Cerci provides goals, Batlle raises the defensive level and Baum adds long-term potential.
Arsenal’s recruitment has placed them in a stronger position to challenge. Pre-season will now show how those individual pieces fit together.
