Former Gunner Parlour says Xhaka must improve

Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Barlour believes Granit Xhaka could soon struggle to make the club’s starting line-up, criticising what he offers to the team.

Xhaka has started both of the Gunners Premier League games this season against Manchester City and Chelsea, being replaced by new signing Lucas Torreira on both occasions, and Parlour feels the Switzerland international could struggle to maintain his position when others come into contention.

Currently, manager Unai Emery is fielding the 25-year old Xhaka as a defensive shield for the defensive line, while also connecting the sides defensive and offensive units.

However, Parlour feels that he isn’t consistent enough at doing his job, claiming he lacks mobility and that he ‘gives the ball away too much’.

With none of Torreira, Aaron Ramsey or Mohamed Elneny having started in both games, Xhaka may need to up his game to keep his place.

On the subject of Xhaka, as reported by the Metro, Parlour said:

Xhaka looked to have a good World Cup, so it’s hard to say what’s wrong with him now.

He looks like a guy who takes a bit of time to get back into the rhythm of playing week in, week out after a break, especially with the new manager.

But there are players breathing down his neck. If he doesn’t do his job, he won’t be in the team.

The form players deserve to play. He has to knuckle down and he has to play well.
