Arsenal refuse £117m Rogers demand after firm £80m decision

Arsenal refused the opportunity to match Chelsea’s £117million offer for Morgan Rogers after placing an £80million valuation on the Aston Villa attacker.

The Gunners held a long-standing interest in Rogers and made him one of Mikel Arteta’s priority attacking targets. However, negotiations with Villa never moved close to an agreement.

According to The Athletic, Arsenal were determined to remain within their valuation despite Villa demanding a British-record fee. Chelsea subsequently agreed to pay £117million for the England international.

Arsenal were contacted after Chelsea submitted their offer and asked whether they wanted to match it. Andrea Berta and the club’s recruitment team declined before turning their attention towards alternative targets.

Arsenal Rogers valuation ended transfer hopes

The difference between Arsenal’s £80million valuation and Chelsea’s successful offer stood at £37million.

Villa’s negotiating position was also complicated by Arsenal’s interest in Ezri Konsa. The Gunners reportedly valued the defender considerably below the figure required by Villa, leaving the clubs apart on two possible transfers.

Arsenal maintain that their Rogers pursuit always depended on completing a deal at the right price. They were interested in the 23-year-old but were unwilling to enter a late bidding battle once Chelsea met Villa’s demands.

Missing out on Rogers leaves Arteta without one of his preferred attacking options. However, refusing to exceed the internal valuation will allow Arsenal to redirect a considerable transfer budget elsewhere.
