Arsenal are set to appoint Pascal De Maesschalck as their new academy head after agreeing a deal for the Strasbourg technical director.
The Belgian is expected to replace Per Mertesacker, whose departure left one of Arsenal’s most important development posts vacant before the 2026/27 season.
Daily Cannon reports that BBC reporter Sami Mokbel says a deal has been agreed, with De Maesschalck set to leave Strasbourg for north London.
Sami Mokbel’s X post also states that Arsenal are appointing the Belgian from BlueCo-owned Strasbourg.
It is an important appointment for Andrea Berta and Mikel Arteta.
Arsenal’s academy structure has already been under pressure this summer, with the under-21 head coach role also vacant after Max Porter’s move to Stoke City.
Why De Maesschalck Appointment Matters
De Maesschalck arrives with a strong development background.
He has worked as academy manager at Club Brugge and AS Monaco before moving into Strasbourg’s technical department.
That gives Arsenal an experienced academy operator rather than just a symbolic successor to Mertesacker.
The timing also matters.
Arsenal have built a Premier League-winning first team, but their long-term strength still depends on Hale End producing players who can either break through or carry strong market value.
Recent contract questions around young players have sharpened that point.
Read Arsenal has already covered how Ashley Cole’s coaching route raised a wider Hale End pathway question, and De Maesschalck’s arrival belongs in the same conversation.
Arsenal do not just need talent at academy level. They need a clearer route for that talent.
That means better development plans, stronger loan decisions and more certainty over which players are being prepared for Arteta’s squad and which may need another route.
De Maesschalck’s job will be to make that process cleaner.
Berta’s senior recruitment work will take most of the attention this summer. This appointment still matters.
A title-winning club cannot afford a disjointed academy. Arsenal are now moving to make sure one of their most important development posts is filled before the new season begins.
