At a Glance:

  • Barcelona beat Real Madrid to clinch the La Liga title on Sunday.
  • Meanwhile, Arsenal beat West Ham United to move a step closer to the Premier League title on the same day.
  • Wojciech Szczesny has had his say on the foul on David Raya and on the Champions League final.

Barcelona may have beaten Real Madrid to secure the La Liga title on Sunday night, but the Catalan giants’ back-up goalkeeper and former Arsenal shot-stopper Wojciech Szczesny’s mind was elsewhere.

Hansi Flick’s team sealed their 29th Spanish title at the weekend, dispatching their most hated rivals in the process. Goals from Marcus Rashford and Ferran Torres secured all three points for La Blaugrana, as they moved 14 points clear of Los Blancos with just three matches remaining.

Just a few hours before this game, Arsenal moved a step closer to winning their own league title by beating West Ham United. A late goal from Leandro Trossard won the Gunners the clash in East London, and Mikel Arteta’s team now merely need to beat Burnley and Crystal Palace to be crowned champions.

What Wojciech Szczesny said about West Ham vs Arsenal after El Clasico

Wojciech Szczesny spent eight years at Arsenal between 2009 and 2017, making 181 appearances in the process. He won two FA Cups with the Gunners, and has since gone on to play for Roma, Juventus and now Barcelona.

Despite not being present at Arsenal since 2015, Szczesny has been vocal about his support for the North London club, regularly claiming that he watches Arteta’s side every week, as well as the Spanish manager’s press conferences.

Thus, it won’t be a huge surprise to many that Szczesny has revealed that he was desperately trying to watch the conclusion of Arsenal’s match at West Ham on Sunday, despite preparing for a title-clinching El Clasico.

“Before the game, everyone was ready for El Clasico, while I was checking to see if there was a foul on Raya,” Szczesny told Eleven Sports.

“Yes, it was [a foul]. I mean, you’re asking a goalkeeper if it was a foul. Yeah, a foul. He couldn’t jump as high as he could have because they held his arm.”

Not only did Szczesny show his devotion and love for Arsenal in this interview, but he also backed his old team in the midst of the VAR controversy at the end of the match. This will no doubt endear him to Gunners supporters across the globe.

What Wojciech Szczesny said about the Champions League final

Arsenal face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final in Budapest at the end of this month. This is just the second time the Gunners have reached this stage of Europe’s elite club competition, while they’re still yet to win it.

Despite PSG’s excellent form, many of the bookmakers and the statistical models project Arsenal only as slight underdogs.

However, that hasn’t stopped Szczesny from revealing that he’s stressed ahead of the showdown in Hungary. Asked who will win the Champions League, he claimed that this was a ‘tough topic right now’.

“Don’t ask me,” the goalkeeper replied.

“Because that’s a tough topic right now. I’m happy with my own victory. And that one stresses me out a lot. Those two trophies that are left.”
