  • The upcoming World Cup will see many Arsenal stars take to the sport’s biggest stage
  • One player has decided to retire from his national team, thanks to their failure to qualify, as well as other reasons
  • The said player has had a complicated season at Arsenal

The 2026 edition of the World Cup, held in the United States, is fast approaching, and fans are nervously waiting to see how their countries perform in the biggest tournament football has to offer—but one Gunner will not be there.

Many Arsenal stars will head to the World Cup as crucial figures within their national team, such as Bukayo Saka for England, William Saliba for France, and even Piero Hincapie for Ecuador.

Some players may, down to no fault of their own, miss out on a World Cup campaign, such as Mikel Merino, who is out with a long-term injury, and Jurrien Timber, whose return date to football is still unknown.

However, there is an Arsenal player has decided to drop his national team career entirely, thanks to an unforeseen turn in events.

Christian Norgaard makes ‘difficult decision’ to retire from Denmark national team

In an Instagram post put out on May 12, Christian Norgaard went into detail regarding his decision to retire from international duty with the Danish national team.

“I have decided to retire from international football. On the one hand, it has been a difficult decision, because there is almost nothing I love more than linking up with my teammates and staff at Marienlyst. There is also almost nothing I love more than playing matches in red and white in front of a sold-out, expectant Parken,” he began.

Translated from Danish, Norgaard states one of his reasons as being because he would like to spend more time around loved ones, as well as Denmark’s failure to qualify for the upcoming World Cup.

“It has been an easy decision, because I want to spend more time with my family, and after the missed World Cup qualification, it also feels natural to make room for the talented and ambitious youngsters Denmark is still fortunate to have,” said the 32-year-old.

He went on to detail his specific memories with the national team, including his debut with the U19s all the way up until his first appearance at senior international level, against England in 2020.

Norgaard’s finest hour with the national team came in 2021, where he starred in all but one of Denmark’s games in their run to the European Championship that year.

The Dane ended off his statement with a heartfelt message, thanking his opportunities on the world stage for making his aspirations as a child come true.

“Now [my journey] is over. I look forward to supporting the team as a fan, but no longer as part of the squad. Thank you to the players, staff and fans for helping make a boyhood dream come true.”

Christian Norgaard’s Arsenal career has been a complicated one so far

Christian Norgaard has made 19 appearances for the Gunners this season, meaning he has been no more than a bit-part player in a season that might see Mikel Arteta’s men win the Premier League and Champions League double.

While this does not point to the midfielder having an especially good season, the consensus seems to be that Norgaard has been useful when played and perhaps has deserved more minutes throughout the year.

However, the recent emergence of Myles Lewis-Skelly as Arsenal’s newest defensive midfielder will most likely mean Norgaard will not see any minutes between now and the end of the season.
