  • Arsenal are looking to bolster their midfield this summer in the transfer window.
  • Sandro Tonali, among others, have been linked with a move to the Emirates.
  • A new name has emerged as a possible target in the middle of the park for Andrea Berta.

Arsenal may be on the brink of winning a historic Premier League and Champions League double, but they aren’t prepared to rest on their laurels, with Andrea Berta already drawing up transfer plans ahead of the summer window.

The Gunners are eager to ensure their success is sustained beyond this season and will continue to build for the future in the upcoming window. Berta is keen on strengthening Mikel Arteta’s squad in the middle of the park, and the North London outfit are subsequently being linked with a host of central midfielders.

Sandro Tonali has been mooted as a target for Arsenal, although it appears the Gunners could now go down a very different path, possibly due to the emergence of Myles Lewis-Skelly as a genuine midfield option.

Arsenal learn asking price for Victor Froholdt

Christian Norgaard is likely to leave Arsenal this summer after not playing regularly in N5 this season. Even with Lewis-Skelly potentially considered a midfield option moving forward, Norgaard’s likely departure would necessitate the need for an addition in this part of the pitch.

According to Ryan Taylor of Football.London, Arsenal are closely observing FC Porto midfielder Victor Froholdt. The Gunners sent recruitment staff to watch Froholdt play for the Primeira Liga giants against Alverca last weekend.

The 20-year-old Dane is said to be content at Porto, and is not expected to be on the list of priority targets for Arsenal. He reportedly has a hefty €85 million (£73.5 million) release clause in his contract.

However, the Times report that Porto have placed a £52 million price tag on Froholdt, and would be prepared to accept offers in this region. Newcastle are also said to be interested in signing the midfielder, along with a host of other Premier League clubs.

Arsenal have run background checks on Froholdt, with numerous sources reporting that he could be deemed a top target by Berta, regardless of what Football.London have suggested.

Should Arsenal sign Victor Froholdt?

Froholdt developed through Copenhagen’s academy before bursting into the first team last season when he was just 18. This spectacular rise to prominence prompted Porto to splash €20 million on the Denmark international last summer, and he’s subsequently gone from strength to strength in Portugal.

Making 49 appearances across all competitions for the Primeira Liga champions this season, Froholdt has scored eight goals and provided seven assists. He’s now garnering attention from clubs across Europe, and looks set to earn a big move, even if it doesn’t come this summer.

Despite this meteoric rise, many won’t be aware of Froholdt and the primary attributes he possesses. Several supporters on Reddit have compared the Dane to former Liverpool number eight Gini Wijnaldum, with one even dubbing the Porto man a ‘regen’ of the Reds’ ex-star.

Like Wijnaldum, he boasts a similar ability to crash the box and get on the end of free-flowing moves. He also possesses a relentless engine, just like his Dutch counterpart.

However, perhaps most strikingly from his numbers and the video footage available on Froholdt, he’s a creative passer from the middle of the pitch, regularly combining with teammates to create openings.

Whether Arsenal should sign him is a different question. They already have the likes of Lewis-Skelly, Max Dowman and Ethan Nwaneri in their ranks, and should prioritise these players’ development rather than spending big on another talented youngster who isn’t obviously better than any of these Hale End graduates.
