  • Newcastle clash demands control, not reaction.

Mikel Arteta Newcastle tactics now sit under the microscope, however, the solution may not lie in reacting to outside noise.

Wayne Rooney’s recent comments have added fuel to the debate, especially after Arsenal’s defeat to Manchester City. Nevertheless, Arteta must resist that pressure and instead lean into what already works.

Because when Arsenal look at their strongest performances, a clear pattern emerges. The balance of Kai Havertz, Eberechi Eze and Martin Odegaard has consistently given the side control, fluidity and presence in the final third. Therefore, rather than second-guessing selection calls, Arteta must double down on that structure heading into Newcastle.

Why Mikel Arteta Newcastle tactics must ignore Rooney narrative

Wayne Rooney’s reaction centres on decisions made in high-pressure moments. While that perspective carries weight, it does not reflect Arsenal’s broader tactical identity. More importantly, it risks dragging the conversation away from what actually improves the team.

Instead, Arteta must prioritise cohesion. When Havertz leads the line, Arsenal gain structure between midfield and attack. He drops intelligently, links play and allows runners to move beyond him. As a result, Odegaard operates with greater freedom, while Eze benefits from pockets of space that simply do not exist otherwise.

A closer look at the numbers between Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyökeres highlights the contrast in profile far more clearly:

The numbers tell a clear story. Gyökeres offers strong output and direct threat; however, Havertz provides greater involvement across phases, linking play and giving Arsenal the control they will need against Newcastle.

How Havertz, Eze and Odegaard unlock Arsenal control

The combination of Havertz, Eze and Odegaard transforms Arsenal’s attacking phases. Firstly, Havertz pins defenders while still offering link-up play. Secondly, Odegaard dictates tempo and manipulates space with his movement. Meanwhile, Eze brings unpredictability, carrying the ball through lines and forcing defensive adjustments.

Because of this, Arsenal sustain pressure more effectively. They do not rely on isolated moments; instead, they build waves of controlled attacks. Against Manchester City, glimpses of that structure appeared despite the result. Therefore, the issue was not the system itself but execution in key moments.

Additionally, this trio improves defensive transitions. By keeping possession higher up the pitch, Arsenal reduce exposure at the back. Consequently, the team feels more stable, which becomes crucial against a physically intense Newcastle side.

What Arsenal must do tactically to beat Newcastle

To beat Newcastle, Arsenal must impose their structure early. That means starting Havertz centrally and surrounding him with intelligent movement. It also means trusting Eze to carry the ball and disrupt Newcastle’s midfield shape.

Moreover, Arsenal need Riccardo Calafiori back if possible. His ability to defend and progress play offers balance that others cannot replicate. Alongside a more secure defensive pairing, this allows Arsenal to push higher without losing control.

At the same time, wide selection becomes key. Martinelli and Trossard offer qualities; however, they can disrupt the central balance if overused. Therefore, Arteta must prioritise players who complement the Havertz-led structure rather than simply adding pace.

Ultimately, Arsenal’s path to victory does not require reinvention. It requires commitment. While Rooney’s comments create noise, Arteta must focus on clarity. If he does, Arsenal give themselves the best chance to dominate Newcastle rather than react to them.
