Mikel Arteta defends ‘exceptional’ under-fire Arsenal star after recent struggles

Mikel Arteta has defended one of his Arsenal players after recent criticism, insisting the midfielder has performed at a high level despite increased scrutiny in recent weeks.

The Spaniard was speaking ahead of Arsenal’s upcoming fixture, where attention has turned towards individual performances within his squad.

With expectations continuing to rise around the club, even small dips in form have become talking points, particularly for players tasked with controlling the tempo in key moments.

Arteta, however, was quick to push back on that narrative, offering a strong and composed response that underlined his trust in the player and the role he plays within Arsenal’s system.

Mikel Arteta responds to criticism of Martin Zubimendi

Mikel Arteta did not hesitate when asked about the scrutiny surrounding his midfielder.

Instead of deflecting, he addressed it directly, reinforcing his belief in the player’s impact.

“He’s very good. I mean, to play 50 games for Arsenal in the first season, at the level that he’s done, and the amount of games that we’ve won, you have to do things in an exceptional way.”

The Arsenal manager continued by highlighting the player’s connection within the squad.

“He’s very much liked by everybody; you can sense that. If you go back to clips in September, October, November, I can show you when he scored goals or assists, or whatever, the reaction and how he feels with his teammates is so good, and we are blessed to have him.”

It was a response that shifted the focus. Not just onto performance, but onto contribution and trust within the group.

Martin Zubimendi importance within Arsenal system

Martin Zubimendi has quickly become a central figure in how Arsenal operate.

His role is not always defined by goals or assists, but by control, positioning, and decision-making in deeper areas.

In a side built around structure and rhythm, those qualities are essential.

When Arsenal function at their best, it is often because players like Zubimendi are dictating tempo behind the scenes.

That influence can be overlooked. Especially when results fluctuate or when expectations rise.

Arteta’s comments suggest he sees the bigger picture. The consistency, the availability, and the trust built over a demanding schedule.

Arteta trust reflects Arsenal long term project

Arteta’s defence is also reflective of a wider theme at Arsenal.

Patience.

There was a time when the manager himself faced similar scrutiny. Results were questioned, performances analysed, and pressure mounted quickly.

The club chose to remain committed.

That decision has shaped the current environment. One where players are backed through difficult moments rather than judged instantly.

It is a contrast to other clubs across the league, where short-term thinking often dictates decisions.

Arteta’s words carry weight because of that stability.

They are not reactive. They are consistent with a project that values development, trust, and long-term growth over quick conclusions.
