Arsenal host Newcastle United on Saturday evening in the Premier League, as Mikel Arteta’s side look to resurrect their season and ensure they remain in the title race.
Manchester City moved above the Gunners and to the summit of the English top flight on Wednesday night by beating Burnley 1-0 at Turf Moor. While losing their grip on first may be somewhat psychologically damaging for Arteta’s men, they should be buoyed by the Citizens’ inability to add to their tally in Lancashire, given the title race could come down to goal difference.
The two teams sit level on points with five matches left to play, although Arsenal now have a fantastic opportunity to pull away from City in their next two matches. The North Londoners have home games against Newcastle and Fulham before Pep Guardiola’s outfit play their next league fixture – a trip to Everton on a Monday night.
| Rank | Team | Pts | Pld | GD |
| 1 | Man City | 70 | 33 | +37 |
| 2 | Arsenal | 70 | 33 | +37 |
If the Gunners can emerge from these two matches with six points, all of a sudden, City will be the side feeling the pressure. This could certainly swing the momentum in the title race.
Fortunately for Arteta and his players, they face Newcastle at the best possible moment. Eddie Howe will be without Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento for the visit to the Emirates, while his team is also currently in the midst of a dire run of form, which has seen the Magpies lose four on the bounce.
The north-east side are stranded in 14th in the league, too far from the European places to realistic mount a late charge for continental qualification and too far from the relegation zone to be sucked in. Thus, they have little to play for aside from pride, and this should suit the Gunners.
