Regardless of whether Arsenal end up winning silverware at the end of the season, they will have to further strengthen their roster in the summer.
Mikel Arteta’s side have admired Bradley Barcola and Anthony Gordon for ages, which goes to show that elite clubs spend months in advance deciding their transfer targets before the summer window opens.
It seems like the Gunners are keen to address several priority positions in the summer, with Eintracht Frankfurt left-back Nathaniel Brown acknowledging Arsenal’s interest recently as well.
With Mikel Merino potentially set to depart Arsenal, a summer of change at the Emirates Stadium can be anticipated.
Arsenal target Ederson expected to leave Atalanta
As a result, Arsenal have shown interest in midfielder Djaoui Cisse from Rennes ahead of the summer.
In a Q&A session for The Athletic, journalist David Ornstein revealed the Gunners are interested in signing Atalanta star Ederson alongside Manchester United and Atletico Madrid. The 26-year-old started against the English giants in September 2024 in a 0-0 draw in the Champions League but fared impressively.

The reputed journalist claimed that the Brazilian international’s suitors reckon they could sign him for €40 million (£34.8 million) but Atalanta are hoping to bank a figure around €50 million (£43.5 million).
Ornstein also reported that in his eyes, Ederson could leave Atalanta relatively early in the summer, revealing: “The biggest factor affecting transfer activity at present, David [the person who posed the question], is the amount of managerial uncertainty. Most players want to know who they will be working under. Of course, loads of background work is happening; however, there really needs to be some clarity in the dugout before the market can properly get going.”
“Then, the World Cup will certainly delay a lot of business, so expect a very busy period after the tournament and right up to the deadline. One move I expect to happen early is Ederson out of Atalanta: a year to go on contract, no sign of a renewal and all parties expect him to go.”
David Ornstein added that Ederson’s agent is hard at work to facilitate his client’s exit from Bergamo.
Ederson could be Arsenal’s Sandro Tonali alternative
Arsenal have eyed Sandro Tonali for a long time but in the summer, it could be difficult to prise him away from St. James’ Park.
While Newcastle will need to sell a first-team player in the summer, the Italian is one of their most important players.
Furthermore, Newcastle value Tonali north of £100 million and as things stand, it seems unlikely that Andrea Berta would sanction such a big-money transfer for a central midfielder.
As a result, perhaps Ederson could well be a more affordable alternative to the Serie A winner.
