Arsenal visit Southampton on Saturday night in the FA Cup, looking to progress into the semi-final of England’s oldest competition, as Mikel Arteta continues his pursuit of a treble.
The Gunners have had two weeks to mull over their Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City, which brought an end to their ambitious hopes of winning an unprecedented quadruple. They remain nine points clear of the Citizens in the Premier League, and maintaining this lead will be Arteta’s priority moving forward – this could ultimately influence the Spaniard’s team selection against the Saints on Saturday.
Ten Arsenal players withdrew from international duty over the past week, with the Gunners clearly looking to protect those on the edge of burnout. The likes of Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and William Saliba all remained in North London, although many of those who have had their feet up in the last ten days will still likely be rested for the trip to the south coast.
Arteta will definitely be without Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke, both of whom are recovering from injury issues. The absence of these England internationals could create room for the likes of Max Dowman and Myles Lewis-Skelly to feature at St. Mary’s.
Southampton come into this clash in superb form, having not lost a match in any competition since mid-January. Buoyed by the winter appointment of manager Tonda Ecket, the Saints may actually rest several key players for this FA Cup encounter, as they prepare for an important run-in of their own.
The south coast outfit sit sixth in the Championship, level on points with seventh-placed Wrexham, whom they face on Tuesday night.
