Khedira waiting for Arsenal switch – but the club must look elsewhere

Juventus midfielder Sami Khedira wants to join Arsenal, according to claims from ilBiancoNero, but the Gunners should not be focusing on adding to their options in the middle.

The Germany international is believed to have been eyed by Turkish pair Besiktas and Fenerbahce but rejected a move to the Super Lig as he targets a late arrival in North London.

Whether or not Arsenal will make a move for Khedira remains to be seen, but questions can certainly be asked about whether or not this is a worthwhile transfer.

The Gunners are already well-stocked with central midfielders – blessed with both experience and youth – and it is difficult to see what signing Khedira would necessarily add. He has clear pedigree, but Unai Emery has bigger issues to address.

For Premier League clubs, the transfer window closes on Thursday evening. Until then, Arsenal should be working tirelessly to secure a deal for a new central defender, especially following the departure of Laurent Koscielny to Bordeaux.

William Saliba is an excellent signing, but with the young Frenchman returning to Saint-Etienne for the season on loan, a player who can make an immediate impact is required.

Khedira would by no means be a bad addition, but if Arsenal are serious about returning to the Champions League ahead of the 2020/21 season, they absolutely must prioritise the recruitment of a new centre-back.
