Three Stars of the Match: Arsenal 3-4 Liverpool

Sunday, 14 August will go down in the history books as the classic match that summarizes the emotions of Arsenal supporters. In 90 minutes, Gooners got a season’s worth of feelings that, like many recent seasons, ended in disappointment.

The first match of the Premier League season for the Gunners ended in a 4-3 loss to Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium in North London. It started out poorly when Theo Walcott saw his penalty saved by Simon Mignolet, then it got better when Walcott beat the Liverpool keeper from a tight angle to make it 1-0.

It all went downhill just before halftime when Phillipe Coutinho hit one of the most perfect free-kicks a fan will ever see into the top corner of the Arsenal goal. In the second half, the onslaught from the Reds continued with a scrappy goal from Adam Lallana, a debut goal for Sadio Manè, and another goal for Coutinho. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Calum Chambers each netted after Liverpool scored their fourth, but it was too little, too late.

Additionally, both Alex Iwobi and Aaron Ramsey went off injured and will be reevaluated in the near future. Amid all that bad news, let’s see the three stars of the match.

matchday.
