5 greatest Hale End Academy graduates to play for Arsenal – ranked

Arsenal have had many players signed for lucrative fees that have gone on to great success in North London, but some of their best-ever players have risen through the ranks of the prestigious Hale End Academy.

In the past few seasons, Arsenal fans have seen youngsters such as Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri make their imprint on the Arsenal first team, as well as the supremely talented Max Dowman making his Arsenal debut at only 15 years of age.

But many before them have come and gone, with some building lasting legacies at either Highbury or the Emirates and becoming synonymous with Arsenal as a club and its values.

With that said, who are the five greatest graduates from the Hale End academy to have ever put on an Arsenal shirt?

5 – Bukayo Saka

There is little doubt that Bukayo Saka is the standard-bearer for Hale End in the modern era. Since making his senior debut in 2018 as a left-back, the winger has developed from a versatile academy graduate into one of the most influential players in world football.

Now a key figure under Mikel Arteta, Saka has become the creative focal point of Arsenal’s attack and a crucial player at both club and country level, where he represents England. Saka’s perseverance through injuries and struggles with form was finally rewarded at the end of the 2025/26 season, with the winger finally lifting the Premier League title with his hometown club.

At the time of writing, Saka has played 312 times for Arsenal, scoring 81 goals.

4 – Liam Brady

Graduating to the first team in 1973, Liam Brady combined technical ability with shot power in a way that was rarely seen for its time. He famously guided the Gunners to the 1979 FA Cup trophy before taking his talents to Italy, having made over 250 appearances for Arsenal.

3 – Ashley Cole

Emerging from Hale End at the turn of the century, Ashley Cole established himself as one of Arsenal’s most reliable performers and played a major role in some of the club’s greatest-ever sides, including the Invincibles.

Cole made 228 appearances for the Gunners, winning two Premier League titles and three FA Cups during his time in North London. Renowned for his defensive excellence, pace and ability to contribute in attack, he helped redefine expectations of the modern full-back, even despite his controversial move to cross-town rivals Chelsea in 2006.

2 – David O’Leary

David O’Leary is a name synonymous with longevity at Arsenal. Joining the club as a teenager in the early 1970s, the defender went on to spend almost 20 years in North London and remains the club’s record appearance holder with 722 matches under his belt.

Noted for his calm and dependable presence, O’Leary was a fixture across multiple generations of Arsenal teams, winning two league titles, two League Cups and the domestic cup double in his final season before departing in 1993.

1 – Tony Adams

Mr. Arsenal himself. Tony Adams embodies everything that Arsenal represents, with the Englishman having made his debut for the club at only 17 years of age in 1983.

To this day, he remains the only player in English football history to have captained a league-winning team in three different decades, being part of both George Graham’s great team of the late 1980s and Arsene Wenger’s revolutionary sides of the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Adams made 672 appearances for Arsenal before eventually retiring at the age of 36.
