Henry – Gay athletes must be accepted

Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry says it should be “ok by now” for gay footballers to talk about their sexuality and be comfortable with ‘coming out’.

Henry told Sky News that with the world we’re living in, it should easily be accepted

We’re living in a different time, a different world, and people should accept that.

Professional athletes from all sports have always been very hesitant to tell the world their true sexuality, mainly because they are unsure of how their fans and sponsors would react.

However, recently a rapidly increasing number of sport icons have decided to tell the public about their sexuality.

Henry, a Sky ambassador said that he wouldn’t have a problem playing with someone who is gay.

It’s not a problem, we’re ultimately there to do a job. Whatever you believe in, whatever you do.

If I was in a dressing room, that guy would still have been my teammate and I would still give him the ball, and I would still see him the same way, still go out with him.

We’re all human beings at the end of the day, so it doesn’t really bother me.

In 2013, American footballer Robbie Rogers was the second male footballer based in the UK to come out as gay – at the time, he was a free agent having been released by Leeds United. After discussing his sexuality in public, he briefly retired before reversing his decision and signing for Los Angeles Galaxy, becoming the first openly gay male athlete to join the MLS.
