Arsenal could make a major Declan Rice selection decision against Coventry City on Friday as Mikel Arteta manages the midfielder’s return following an exhausting 69-game campaign.
Rice was available for Arsenal’s Community Shield victory over Manchester City but only featured from the bench after returning late from his post-World Cup break.
The England international has now played just 45 minutes of match football since the tournament and may not be thrown straight back into Arsenal’s starting XI.
Declan Rice Arsenal return could be delayed
According to talkSPORT, Rice is not currently expected to start Arsenal’s Premier League opener against newly-promoted Coventry.
The 27-year-old featured in 69 matches for club and country last season, making careful management particularly understandable at the beginning of another campaign Arsenal hope will stretch deep into May.
Arteta also has considerably more freedom to be patient than he did previously.
Myles Lewis-Skelly impressed in central midfield during the 3-0 Community Shield win over Manchester City, while £75million summer signing Bruno Guimaraes also started in Cardiff.
Martin Odegaard remains another automatic midfield contender.
That could allow Arsenal to leave Rice among the substitutes on Friday without significantly weakening the side.
It would also change ReadArsenal’s predicted XI for the Coventry fixture, which initially included Rice alongside Guimaraes and Odegaard.
Five additional days of training could still alter Arteta’s thinking before kick-off.
Rice is available rather than injured, so this appears to be a question of workload and readiness instead of fitness keeping him out entirely.
Arsenal travel to Aston Villa in their second Premier League fixture, when Arteta may place greater value on having Rice ready for a significantly tougher midfield battle.
The champions therefore have little reason to rush one of their most important players against Coventry.
After a 69-game season and shortened summer, Arsenal finally possess enough midfield depth to give Rice that luxury.
