Arsenal have been linked with a surprise move for Tottenham defender Cristian Romero as Mikel Arteta searches for defensive cover.
The Gunners’ interest in Cristian Romero comes amid competition from Inter Milan and Barcelona, although a move across north London appears highly unlikely.
Saturday’s edition of Corriere dello Sport claims Arsenal are among the clubs monitoring the Argentina international. Sport Witness has relayed the Italian report, which primarily focuses on Inter’s attempts to sign Romero.
Tottenham initially valued the 28-year-old at €50million. However, Spurs are reportedly prepared to lower their asking price and consider alternative deal structures as Inter attempt to reach an agreement.
Romero is open to joining Inter, although personal terms have not been agreed. His agent, Ciro Palermo, and intermediary Vincent Casella were pictured in Milan on Friday as discussions surrounding his future continued.
The Arsenal link should still be treated cautiously. Sport Witness suggests Romero’s representatives may be using interest from Arsenal and Barcelona to strengthen their position during negotiations with Inter.

Arsenal are assessing defensive options because William Saliba is expected to miss an extended period with a back injury. ReadArsenal recently covered the club’s interest in signing John Stones on a free transfer as Arteta considers experienced cover.
Romero would bring Premier League experience, aggression and the ability to defend high up the pitch. He also has the personality to organise a back line during Saliba’s absence.
However, Tottenham agreeing to strengthen their closest rivals would be a major surprise. Romero would also face competition from Gabriel Magalhaes, Piero Hincapie and Saliba once the France international returns.
Inter appear to offer the more realistic destination. They have already contacted Romero’s camp, while Spurs are showing greater flexibility over the fee and payment structure.
The Arsenal interest in Cristian Romero remains no more than a reported possibility. Unless direct talks emerge, the claim looks more useful to the ongoing Inter negotiations than the start of a serious move to the Emirates Stadium.
