Ben White is expected to return to Arsenal’s pre-season training after making encouraging progress in his recovery from a serious knee injury.
The defender suffered medial knee ligament damage during Arsenal’s victory over West Ham United in May. The problem ruled him out of the Champions League final and ended his hopes of representing England at the World Cup.
According to Sam Wallace’s report for The Telegraph, White has recovered well and is expected to report for pre-season preparations.
Jurrien Timber could also feature during the summer schedule as he continues his rehabilitation from a groin injury.
White return eases Arsenal defensive concern
White’s expected return provides Mikel Arteta with an important option at right-back and centre-back.
The 28-year-old made only limited appearances last season after Timber established himself on the right side of Arsenal’s defence. However, both players suffered injuries during the closing months of the campaign.
Timber missed the World Cup after failing to recover fully from the groin problem he sustained against Everton in March. Arsenal remain hopeful that he can play some part in pre-season, although his workload will need to be managed carefully.
Their progress is particularly important because William Saliba could miss the start of the season with a back injury. ReadArsenal recently reported that Arsenal were considering John Stones as experienced defensive cover.
White can move inside to replace Saliba when required, while Timber and Cristhian Mosquera offer alternative options alongside Gabriel Magalhães.
Arsenal’s opening friendly against Girona takes place on 1 August. They then face Real Betis, Borussia Dortmund and Como before meeting Manchester City in the Community Shield.
White may not be ready to complete full matches immediately. His expected involvement still provides Arteta with a timely fitness lift as Arsenal prepare to defend their Premier League title.
