Arsenal are considering a surprise free-transfer move for John Stones as Mikel Arteta prepares for the possibility of losing William Saliba for several months.
Tom Barclay reports that the former Manchester City defender has emerged as a potential short-term solution at the Emirates Stadium.
Saliba is awaiting further assessment after his long-standing back problem became too painful during France’s World Cup semi-final defeat by Spain. Early reports have suggested surgery could rule the 25-year-old out for up to five months.
Stones is available without a transfer fee after leaving Manchester City at the end of June. The 32-year-old is considering interest from clubs in England and abroad following the conclusion of the World Cup.
Stones could offer immediate Saliba cover
Arteta knows Stones well from his time as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City. The defender’s experience in a possession-based system could allow him to settle quickly into Arsenal’s style.
ReadArsenal previously reported that Arsenal were preparing a £60m move for Ezri Konsa following the concerns over Saliba.
Stones would offer a much cheaper alternative. He can play at centre-back or move into midfield during possession, while his Premier League and Champions League experience would help during Arsenal’s title defence.
However, his fitness record presents an obvious concern. Stones started only four matches for City after November last season and would need to prove he can handle regular football.
Cristhian Mosquera, Gabriel Magalhaes and Piero Hincapie already give Arteta several central options. Ben White and Jurrien Timber can also move inside when required.
Stones would therefore arrive as experienced cover rather than a guaranteed starter. A short contract could protect Arsenal financially while giving Saliba the time required to recover properly.
The Gunners must first learn the full extent of Saliba’s injury. Should a lengthy absence be confirmed, Stones offers an experienced and affordable option without using a large part of Arsenal’s remaining transfer budget.
