Arsenal are now seriously competing with Manchester City to sign highly-rated Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, according to reports in France.
The 18-year-old emerged as one of the leading young players at the World Cup after helping Morocco reach the quarter-finals.
His performances have intensified interest from across Europe, but Arsenal and Manchester City now appear to be the two clubs pushing hardest for his signature.
L’Équipe reports that both Premier League clubs have been convinced by Bouaddi’s profile. Lille president Olivier Létang believes the midfielder could remain in France for another season, although he has refused to rule out a transfer.
Bouaddi signed a contract extension until 2029 in December, placing Lille in a strong negotiating position.
Arsenal must decide how far to push
ReadArsenal previously covered Manchester City moving ahead in the Bouaddi race, with the Premier League champions prepared to place him immediately in Enzo Maresca’s first-team squad.
Arsenal have tracked Bouaddi for more than a year and reportedly opened discussions with his representatives before the World Cup.
The teenager would provide Mikel Arteta with a technically secure midfielder who can receive possession under pressure, progress the ball and operate in several central roles.
However, Lille’s demands could make a deal difficult. Létang has denied setting an official asking price, but acknowledged that only a small number of clubs could afford Bouaddi.
Arsenal are also pursuing Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes and have established a firm valuation for the Brazilian. Spending heavily on both midfielders would be unlikely.
Andrea Berta must therefore decide whether Bouaddi is an immediate priority or a long-term opportunity worth securing before Manchester City.
Arsenal are no longer simply monitoring the situation. Their reported challenge to City suggests the race has entered a more serious stage.
