Bukayo Saka ended his World Cup with a hat-trick for England, but his decisive performance against France also reinforced the difficult decision awaiting Arsenal and Mikel Arteta.
The winger completed 90 minutes as England secured third place with an extraordinary 6-4 victory in Miami. Saka scored twice before half-time and completed his treble from the penalty spot during the closing stages.
His performance came only three days after Thomas Tuchel left him on the bench throughout England’s semi-final defeat by Argentina. Saka responded in familiar fashion, producing the decisive moments rather than publicly questioning the manager’s decision.

Saka remains decisive when the pressure rises
Saka’s value to Arsenal extends beyond his overall goals and assists. Arteta relies on him when matches become difficult and space disappears.

Arteta has greater room to protect Saka
Arsenal are better equipped to manage Saka than they were during previous seasons. Noni Madueke can start on the right, while Ethan Nwaneri and Gabriel Martinelli provide further attacking options.
Rotation should not be viewed as reducing Saka’s importance. Protecting him during favourable fixtures could improve his availability for title-defining Premier League and Champions League matches.
Arsenal do not need Saka to play every available minute. They need him fit enough to decide the biggest games.
The France performance delivered another example of his influence. Arteta’s task is ensuring Saka reaches those important moments in the condition required to produce them.
