Bukayo Saka benched as Declan Rice starts for England vs Norway

Bukayo Saka has been left out of England’s starting XI for tonight’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway, while Declan Rice starts despite illness concerns during the week.

Thomas Tuchel has named Noni Madueke on the right wing in Miami, with Saka among the substitutes for one of England’s biggest games of the tournament.

The Guardian’s live coverage says Madueke has replaced an unfit Saka, while Ezri Konsa has shifted to right-back because of England’s defensive absences.

For Arsenal supporters, the decision brings mixed emotions. Saka’s absence from the XI is a surprise, but it may also bring a degree of relief after a heavy workload and his earlier Achilles issue.

Rice, meanwhile, starts again in midfield. ReadArsenal covered Rice’s illness before England’s Norway quarter-final, but Tuchel has still trusted him from the start.

Saka Absence Looks Like A Fitness Call

Saka’s omission does not look like a simple footballing decision.

The Arsenal winger had started against Panama and Mexico, and he assisted Jude Bellingham’s opener in the last-16 win. He now has three assists at this World Cup, putting him among a small group of Arsenal players to reach that mark at a single tournament.

ReadArsenal also looked at Saka’s role before the Norway game, with his right-wing battle against Madueke one of the main selection questions.

Tuchel has chosen Madueke this time, and the tactical reasoning is clear enough. Konsa is more defensive than Reece James, so England may want Madueke to hold width and attack David Moller Wolfe directly.

There is also the fitness angle. Saka came into the tournament managing Achilles tendinitis, and he completed a demanding shift against Mexico. Arsenal will not want him exposed to unnecessary risk, especially with the Premier League title defence coming quickly after the World Cup.

Rice Remains England’s Midfield Constant

Rice’s start says plenty about his importance to England.

He missed training during the week after illness concerns, but Tuchel has kept him in midfield alongside Elliot Anderson. talkSPORT reports that Rice was among the players back in full training before the game, which explains why England were comfortable naming him in the XI.

From an Arsenal perspective, there is still a workload concern. Rice has carried a major tournament burden, and England’s progress would extend his summer right to the final week.

The same applies to Martin Odegaard on the other side. Norway’s captain starts against England, giving Arsenal supporters another reason to watch closely beyond the national-team angle.

ReadArsenal recently covered Saka defending Odegaard before the quarter-final, and the pair could still meet on the pitch if Saka is introduced after the break.

Arsenal Wait On Saka’s Role From The Bench

England’s bench may still decide this game.

Saka gives Tuchel control, balance and elite decision-making if England need a change on the right. His relationship with Rice and Bellingham also makes him a natural option if the game becomes stretched.

Arsenal’s concern is different. Mikel Arteta needs Saka sharp, not overused, when club football returns.

Victory for England would set up a semi-final against Argentina or Switzerland in Atlanta. It would also guarantee England’s Arsenal contingent stay at the tournament until the final weekend because of the third-place play-off.

For England, that is a reward. For Arsenal, it adds another layer to pre-season planning.

Saka’s bench role may frustrate supporters tonight. In the bigger picture, it could prove the sensible call.
