Martin Odegaard Steers Norway Into England World Cup Clash

Martin Odegaard has dragged another Arsenal storyline deep into the World Cup after captaining Norway into a quarter-final meeting with England.

Norway stunned Brazil 2-1 in the last 16, with The Guardian reporting that Erling Haaland scored twice in the final 10 minutes to send the five-time champions out. Reuters also noted that the defeat was Brazil’s worst World Cup performance since 1990.

For Arsenal, the result shifts attention straight back to Odegaard’s workload, leadership role and emotional momentum before the new domestic season.

Reuters’ team news before the game confirmed Odegaard started for Norway, while Gabriel Magalhaes and Gabriel Martinelli started for Brazil. That made the tie a direct Arsenal dressing-room subplot, with the club captain coming out on top against two team-mates.

Odegaard Gives Arteta A High-Class Pre-Season Complication

Arsenal had already confirmed that 12 Gunners were chasing World Cup quarter-final places, with Odegaard part of a large travelling group across the knockout rounds.

The upside is obvious: Arsenal’s captain is operating on the biggest stage with authority. The cost is just as clear. A quarter-final against England means another high-intensity fixture, more travel and a shorter recovery window before Mikel Arteta begins shaping his title defence.

Read Arsenal has already tracked the wider World Cup strain on Arteta’s squad. Odegaard’s Norway run now gives that issue a sharper edge.

Arsenal’s chief creator is not just involved. He is leading one of the tournament’s biggest stories, with England now standing directly in his path.
