Arsenal’s pre-season route is now tightening into a clear August control test for Mikel Arteta as the Premier League champions prepare for a shortened summer build-up.
Football.london reported that some members of the squad are expected back for pre-season work in mid-July, with the World Cup final not taking place until July 19. That leaves Arteta managing a staggered return before Arsenal begin their public match programme.
The club have already confirmed their first two friendlies, with Arsenal travelling to Girona on August 1 before facing Real Betis at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on August 5.
Arsenal then host Borussia Dortmund in the Emirates Cup on August 9, before facing Como at Emirates Stadium on August 12. The Community Shield against Manchester City follows on August 16, five days before the league opener against Coventry City.
Arteta Faces Compressed Build-Up
The shape of the calendar gives Arsenal elite-level tests without a long-haul tour, but the World Cup return dates will decide how quickly key senior players are reintegrated.
August 1: Girona, Estadi Montilivi
August 5: Real Betis, Aviva Stadium
August 9: Borussia Dortmund, Emirates Cup
August 12: Como, Emirates Stadium
August 16: Community Shield against Manchester City
August 21: Coventry City, Emirates Stadium
Read Arsenal has already covered how the World Cup could complicate Arteta’s title-defence planning, with several first-team players involved deep into the summer.
The Dortmund fixture now looks like the most useful stress test before competitive football resumes. It should arrive late enough for returning players to be closer to match rhythm, but early enough for Arteta to make meaningful adjustments before the Community Shield.
For Arsenal, this is less about friendly results than control: who gets protected, who builds minutes early, and how sharply the champions can move from celebrations into a title defence.
