Mikel Merino came off the bench as Spain beat Austria 3-0 to reach the World Cup last 16, extending Arsenal’s wait for their Spanish players to return.
Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice in Los Angeles, while Pedro Porro also struck as Spain moved through the round of 32, with The Guardian’s live report detailing a controlled knockout win.
Arsenal had already flagged the fixture through their own World Cup guide, with David Raya, Merino and Martin Zubimendi all part of Spain’s squad.
Merino was introduced in the 70th minute, replacing Alex Baena as Spain managed the closing stages of the tie.
For Arsenal, his cameo was manageable rather than alarming. But Spain’s progress keeps him inside the tournament calendar and delays his return to Mikel Arteta’s pre-season work.
Read Arsenal had previewed the Spain-Austria selection picture before kick-off, and the post-match picture now gives Arteta another workload call to manage.
Raya and Zubimendi remain part of the same wider picture. Even if their minutes vary, they are still away from club-specific conditioning and Arsenal’s tactical preparation.
Arteta will not need to panic, but the recovery plan now matters. Arsenal cannot ask tournament players to move straight from World Cup intensity into full pre-season load.
Spain’s win was good news for Merino and his country. For Arsenal, it adds another small workload call before the new season.
