Arsenal have reportedly held talks with Strasbourg technical director Pascal De Maesschalck as the club accelerate their search for Per Mertesacker’s academy successor.
According to The Athletic, the Belgian has emerged as one of the leading candidates for the role, although the recruitment process remains ongoing rather than finalised.
That distinction matters. Arsenal are not simply replacing a title – they are choosing the next operator for a Hale End pathway that has become central to Mikel Arteta’s squad model and the club’s long-term trading strength.
Arsenal Face A Key Hale End Appointment
Arsenal confirmed in January that Mertesacker would leave at the end of the season after eight years as Academy Manager, closing a major chapter for one of the club’s most recognisable post-playing figures.
The next appointment will inherit a department judged on more than youth-team results. Arsenal need continued first-team-ready production, smarter recruitment and a clear development plan for the next wave after Bukayo Saka, Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly.
That is why the De Maesschalck link deserves attention. For a club already tracking elite youth opportunities, as seen in the recent Jeremy Monga pathway debate, this decision could shape the next phase of Arsenal’s talent pipeline.
Aside from the aforementioned players, Max Dowman has also become a first-team player under Arteta recently, while a handful of youngsters – like the Quintero twins – have been snapped up as rough diamonds to potentially develop behind the scenes.
Arsenal need to get their appointment right as Mertesacker’s legacy makes him a tough one to replace. And it appears as if they are wasting no time in sorting out a deal for De Maesschalck, whose work at Club Brugge, Monaco and BlueCo-owned Strasbourg makes him an intriguing candidate.
