Arsenal have the opportunity to move six points clear at the top of the Premier League table when they host Fulham at the Emirates on Saturday evening.
The Gunners beat Newcastle United last Saturday, moving back ahead of Manchester City following their defeat at the Etihad the previous weekend. The Citizens don’t play in the league again until Monday night, and thus, Mikel Arteta’s outfit have the chance to pile the pressure onto their title rivals ahead of that encounter on Merseyside.
An Arsenal victory against the Cottagers would be psychologically damaging for Pep Guardiola’s ensemble, and it’s therefore hugely important that Arteta’s players do the business on Saturday evening in N5. They face a Fulham side brimming with confidence after beating Champions League hopefuls Aston Villa last weekend.
The Cottagers are still in the mix for a European spot, meaning Marco Silva’s side will fired up for their visit to Islington. On top of this, Arsenal will be without Jurrien Timber and Kai Havertz for this showdown, while Martin Odegaard is a doubt.
With that said, here are the key battles that we believe could be pivotal in dictating the outcome of the game at the Emirates.
Piero Hincapie vs Harry Wilson
Harry Wilson has been Fulham’s danger man this season, with the Welshman scoring 11 goals and providing seven assists across all competitions thus far. While he may not consistently impact games for 90 minutes, his wand of a left foot is capable of scoring remarkable goals from all angles and can also create for teammates with delightful crosses.
Piero Hincapie will be pitted against Wilson, and while the Ecuadorian has all the tools to physically deal with the winger, he needs to prevent Fulham’s talisman from cutting inside and getting shots off.

If Hincapie manages to do this, Arsenal should be able to contain the West Londoners’ threat with relative ease, particularly with primary playmaker Alex Iwobi out injured.
Viktor Gyokeres vs Joachim Andersen
In the reverse fixture at Craven Cottage in October, Joachim Andersen got the better of Viktor Gyokeres. The Dane physically dominated the Swede, limiting Arsenal’s striker to few clear-cut opportunities throughout the match.
The two players will be matched up against each other again at the Emirates, and the Gunners will need a lot more from their centre-forward if they’re to emerge with three points.
While Gyokeres has struggled in many aspects this season, one area of the game he excels is pressing. Andersen notoriously likes to take his time on the ball before spotting line-breaking passes, and thus, this could be an area where Gyokeres can exploit his opposite number.
| Viktor Gyokeres’ statistics this season (all competitions) | |
| Appearances | 49 |
| Goals | 19 |
| Assists | 2 |
| Shots per 90 | 2.11 |
| Expected Goals per 90 (non-penalty) | 0.35 |
Bukayo Saka vs Antonee Robinson
Bukayo Saka is back and raring to go. After positive cameos against Newcastle and Atletico Madrid, he’ll be itching to start at the Emirates on Sunday.
While the Gunners could have a fresh face on their right wing, Fulham may have a fresh face at left-back. Ryan Sessgnon has been the Cottagers’ primary left-sided defender for a lot of this season, but the former Tottenham man is unavailable for this game and will likely be replaced by Antonee Robinson.
Robinson and Saka have had some fierce battles in the past, and this one is likely to be crucial in determining the outcome on Saturday. If Saka can beat Robinson even just once or twice, that could prove to be the difference between the two teams.
