Arsenal fans think that 53-touch star played very well against Bournemouth despite disastrous defeat

At a Glance:

  • Arsenal lost 2-1 to Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.
  • The Gunners were abject for most of the game at the Emirates.
  • One player did, however, impress Arsenal supporters.

Arsenal suffered a disastrous defeat at the hands of Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon, although one player emerged from this devastating Premier League title blow with some credit.

The Gunners were dreadful throughout the 90 minutes in N5, struggling to deal with Bournemouth’s long balls and aggressive pressing. Junior Kroupi tapped the Cherries in front in the first half, before Viktor Gyokeres’ emphatic penalty saw the home side draw level.

Alex Scott then won Andoni Iraola’s side the game, combining nicely with Evanilson before tucking the ball past David Raya. The result leave Arsenal nine points clear of Manchester City, although Pep Guardiola’s men now have two games in hand over the North Londoners.

Arsenal fans react to Myles Lewis-Skelly’s performance vs Bournemouth

Myles Lewis-Skelly has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United in recent weeks, with the young defender’s future at Arsenal uncertain after falling behind the likes of Riccardo Calafiori and Piero Hincapie in Mikel Arteta’s pecking order.

However, with the Italian injured and Hincapie only just returning from his own fitness issue, Lewis-Skelly was granted a rare league start against Bournemouth. Deployed at left-back, on the outside of Gabriel Magalhaes, the Hale End graduate held his own in the midst of a chaotic Arsenal performance.

While he was vulnerable to some of Bournemouth’s long balls, he largely dealt with Rayan and was competent in possession. Arsenal supporters were impressed with Lewis-Skelly, voicing a positive outlook on the 19-year-old’s display despite the disastrous outcome of the game.

One fan wrote on X: “Myles Lewis Skelly, you played well today man!”

Another added: “Shoutout to Lewis-Skelly, as he was one of 2 players that can leave his held high today as he won his duels and battles, was trying to make things happen as he progressed the ball really well, and he didn’t deserve to be on the losing team today at all. Top performance.”

Meanwhile, one supporter posited: “Lewis-Skelly locked Rayan down and somehow we are not gonna see him in an Arsenal shirt ever again.”

Finally, one fan suggested that Lewis-Skelly should play ahead of the struggling Martin Zubimendi moving forward: “Lewis-Skelly next to Rice is what we need to do for now until the end of the season. Because how long can Zubimendi play like that and nothing changes? God, I hope Saka and Timber can come back soon. This is horrendous.”

Myles Lewis-Skelly’s statistics vs Bournemouth

Lewis-Skelly has a lot of work to do to overthrow either Hincapie or Calafiori at left-back. However, today was a step in the right direction.

While he was merely adequate defensively, he added significant value to Arsenal’s build-up. He was the only Gunners player in the first half who was able to evade Bournemouth’s press, driving through the lines to get the ball up the pitch.

This competence was reflected in the data. Lewis-Skelly completed six passes into the final third, demonstrating his ball progression qualities, while he also completed three dribbles and passed at 90% accuracy.

Defensively, he won the vast majority of his duels and made five contributions. A positive afternoon for the teenager, on a very negative day for Arsenal in general.
