Paul Scholes makes worrying Max Dowman claim as Arsenal title pressure grows

Paul Scholes has aimed a brutal verdict at Arsenal after claiming Max Dowman is the club’s “only shining light” right now, with the former Manchester United midfielder questioning both the quality of Mikel Arteta’s side and the football they have produced during a defining stage of the season.

The timing of the comment matters. Arsenal remain deep in a Premier League title race and still have major European business ahead of them. However, recent defeats have changed the mood around the club. Confidence has dipped; scrutiny has increased; and every performance now carries extra weight. As a result, Scholes’ words do not land as empty noise. They land as a challenge to the senior players in an Arsenal squad that suddenly looks vulnerable at exactly the wrong time.

Paul Scholes delivers harsh Arsenal assessment

Scholes did not hold back when discussing Arsenal’s current level.

He said the “only shining light” in the team is Dowman and added that he does not think Arsenal are a great team anyway. He also questioned the quality of the football Arteta’s side have played, even while acknowledging the club still hold a strong league position.

That combination makes the criticism sharper. Scholes is not saying Arsenal have no chance. Instead, he is suggesting they have reached this point without truly convincing everyone watching.

Consequently, the line about Dowman stands out even more. A 16 year old should bring excitement. He should not make experienced internationals look second best.

Max Dowman praise also exposes an Arsenal problem

Dowman’s rise deserves praise. He has brought energy, confidence and fearlessness whenever he has stepped into the conversation. Moreover, his recent displays have given supporters something positive to hold onto during a difficult spell.

However, Scholes’ point carries an uncomfortable truth. If one of the youngest players around the first team looks like the brightest spark, Arsenal’s established names need to answer serious questions.

That wider issue already came into focus in the aftermath of the Southampton defeat, where the discussion around Arsenal Southampton player ratings as Dowman and Odegaard came under the spotlight said plenty about who drove the game and who drifted through it.

Arsenal’s senior stars now need to respond

This is where the story turns from Dowman to everybody else.

Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli and the rest of Arteta’s attacking core now need to reassert control. Arsenal cannot allow a teenager to become the symbol of both their future and their present in the same week.

At the same time, Arteta needs his team to rediscover clarity quickly. The broader picture around Arsenal’s next five fixtures and how they could define the title race and Champions League run leaves very little room for another stumble.

Similarly, the manager needs greater attacking authority in decisive moments. That is why conversations around Viktor Gyokeres proving he must start for Arsenal against Sporting after his Southampton impact now carry even more weight.

Scholes may have gone too far but Arsenal gave him an opening

Scholes has never needed much encouragement to criticise Arsenal. Even so, this does not feel like a random swipe. Recent results gave him the opening, and Arsenal’s performances supplied the evidence he wanted to use.

Still, calling Dowman the only shining light feels exaggerated. Arsenal remain top contenders for the biggest prizes still on the table. They have talent across the pitch. They also have a manager who has built one of the strongest sides in the country.

Yet that is exactly why the quote stings.

Because if Arsenal really are as good as they believe, they now need to prove Scholes wrong immediately.

Dowman has done his bit. Now the rest must do theirs.
