Arsenal’s narrow 1-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion may have lacked the entertainment factor on the pitch but the narratives, including Fabian Hurzeler’s post-match remarks, heightened the tense feeling at the Amex Stadium. Not only that but what the German tactician said in his interaction with Piero Hincapie has been revealed.
It was none other than Bukayo Saka who provided the Gunners with a breakthrough in the ninth minute; the Englishman’s strike, which remained unanswered, ricocheted past Bart Verbruggen.
A crucial night in the heated race for the 2025/26 Premier League title given that Manchester City dropped points as a result of their 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest, the Emirates Stadium faithful will just be pleased with three extra points on the board.
A figure notably unhappy with Arsenal and the fact they walked away from the south coast with a seven-point gap on their nearest challengers in City was Hurzeler. The Brighton boss has not been shy in making his feelings clear about the Gunners – and his war of words with Hincapie is evidence of that.
Hincapie and Hurzeler clash on touchline: What did the Brighton boss say?
During a break in play at the Amex, cameras around the stadium caught Hurzeler losing his cool with Arsenal’s Hincapie, who is currently on loan from Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen.
Arsenal were awarded a throw-in and the Brighton manager handed Hincapie the ball. According to the Mirror, his kind gesture was combined with “F***ing play football.”
In response to Hurzeler’s X-rated message, Hincapie simply put his finger to his lip. You can watch the interaction between the duo below:
Some may suggest that it was the perfect response from Hincapie, who put in a terrific performance against the Seagulls. For years, Arsenal have become too reactionary too such moments but does the defender’s reaction epitomise a new Arsenal?
They are now a team that is physically (and mentally!) robust enough to win the Premier League title. According to Opta’s Supercomputer, the north Londoners have a 93.6% chance of reigning supreme.

His side-of-the-pitch antics aside, Hurzeler – who became the youngest permanent manager in Premier League history when he joined Brighton from St. Pauli – did not hold back in his assessment of Arteta’s men and their ‘time-wasting’.
Hurzeler fumes at Arsenal’s ‘time-wasting- tactics after 1-0 loss
Hurzeler’s dislike for the way that Arsenal set up to beat his side didn’t stop there as he took to his post-match press conference with fury. He called out the time-wasting from Arteta’s side by saying, “I will never be a manager who tries to play that way.
“The Premier League needs a rule… you need rules… you need a limit. There was only one team that tried to win the game. I ask you one question: ‘Did you see a goalkeeper go down three times to get treatment?’ I do not want to waste my time talking about it.”
“If you ask everyone here in this room did they enjoy this game, maybe one raises their hand, because he’s a big Arsenal fan,” Hurzeler continued. “If they win the Premier League, they won’t care how… and you can see they do everything to win the Premier League.”
By virtue of fighting on all fronts still, the fixtures continue to come thick and fast for Arsenal. Mansfield Town in the FA Cup is up next before a trip to Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League beckons. Everton await the league leaders in the Premier League
